PAC FURY OVER NUDD'S CALL FOR PIKE CULL

Bob nudd is surely no stranger to some big name pike anglers, and maybe even friends with some? certainly him and john wilson seem quite pally so Im unsure if bob would come out and say these things, given the company he keeps during angling shows etc.

The fact is that everyone bar complete morons know the science behind keeping pike populations established and what happens after culls, im sure bob nudd should know this. If he doesnt and he did indeed call for a cull on pike, the man needs some serious education and needs to make a statement in the press to clarify to match anglers that pike should never be killed.

A good post by Leon, and a very helpful article by Bruno. But I'm puzzled by one thing. If a pike just eats up to twice its own body weight in a year, and I've read elsewhere that a preferred size for a quarry is a third of it's own weight, that means it only has between 3 and 6 meals a year! Of course, banqueting on other pike will provide some extra, but it still seems a very surprising statistic.

Not that I doubt his overall conclusions. The evidence seems strong.

I think I'm right in saying that the preferred size is a proportion of its own length rather than weight. If this proportion is a third of its length, then the weight of such prey would be one twentyseventh the weight of the pike. Thus on this basis it would eat 54 meals a year of this preferred size.

There are occasions when a pike cull on a particular water is justified. Such was the case on the Coarse Lake at Wingham when I got hold of it. This was because the predator/prey balance was totally out of kilter. Indeed we found only predators and no prey at all! Nature certainly wouldn't have been able to put this one right.

However this is a long way from suggesting that rivers in general are over-run with pike as the quote stated.

I do hope that it turns out that Bob was misquoted as he does have a large following.

Yes I would go with your maths Steve, feeding (sucsessfully that is without being caught!) once every 7days or so is what Ive always based it on.

I to have no problem with the killing of pike or the culling of them.It just needs to be done apropriately or when required! the whole sale kill em all attitude of yesterday has been long proven to be poor fishery management. In fact I have a big problem with anglers trying to dictate something they often know very little about full stop.

Ive said it loads of times but Ive seen some great fishing buggered up by anglers who think they know best. Its bad enough at local club/fisheries level but a world renowned angler?

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Steve how on earth did that pred/prey situation come about

Has anyone seen the full article of Bob Nudds?

Well done Budgie, I need to be a little quicker with my posts :)

A trout stream (or what was once a trout stream before it was so badly affected by abstraction) runs though my property. It also contains jack pike that were unwanted by the trout anglers. Rather than kill these I believe the trout anglers transferred them to my lakes. This was before Mother Nature had time to naturally stock the lakes with other species - except eels, another omnivore/predator or course. The only fish stocked before my time were brown trout - same here!

Any fodder fish that did get in would have had no chance with this lot!

"News of the World Article – “Now its time to take out the pike”

There has been a considerable discussion on websites across the internet relating to an article that appeared last Sunday in the News of the World.

Below you will find some clarification on the article

Bob did not suggest killing any fish – pike or otherwise

Bob suggested that thinning out the pike may be an answer.

Having discussed the article with Bob it is clear that his intention was to open discussion on the problem he has seen for himself for the first time in his fishing career, the problem is that nearly every fish he caught on those venues recently was chased or snatched by a pike.

There is clearly an issue here and it needs investigating, why are there so many small pike? Is there an imbalance? Angling bodies need to investigate, once we have the answers, then we can determine if there is a significant issue that requires attention.

Regarding his suggestion of “thinning out” Bob was suggesting that some of the smaller pike, say up to 4lb be selectively collected and removed to other venues, perhaps specialist predator lakes, where an increase in the number of pike would be appreciated.

Conservation is important to Bob; the senseless destruction of any species of fish is abhorrent to him."

Eric Turner.

Budgie , I disagree mate, nowhere does Bob endorse throwing Pike up the bank, killing Pike or encouraging others to do so.....frankly I would have been very surprised if he had! I take your point about moving fish about without a full and proper knowledge of what one is doing though.

I am a match angler .....not an anti-Christ!!!]

bob as you well know the minute you go into print you have to factor in for the lowest common denominator.

bobs comments were and in my opinion still are ambiguous enough for many to believe that was what he was calling for, if he wasnt, which personally i think he was.
