(this isn't aimed at you Chesters! :))

damn this technology!

its like witchcraft!

burn the witches for trying to be different! burn them all!

or....maybe lets move with the times and actually start not carrying around a piece of ****ing paper everywhere!

also, as far as im aware, the last change wasn't a balls up either!

im happily paying my tax by DD each month and its making life a hell of a lot easier instead of having that large bill to sort out every 6 months or year!

the ones that have been caught out; as our media so love to thrust down our throats; are those that:

a: didn't read anything about the new system

b: stuck their heads up their arses and thought "it didn't effect them"

c: couldn't be bothered to sort it out before hand

d: all of the above!!

(and before anyone quotes the "millions" in double tax gained by our ever scheming government; show me one bit of evidence that proves its not a cock up by the people involved! because every one ive read has been " jonny the plank didn't realise he would be paying twice because he's a bloody prat who can barely read!!)

same as everything...new system comes in to play...some arse much cant be bothered to follow what it involves then blames the system when it goes horribly wrong!

take it to Watchdog or something! that's programs full of idiots who cant read what is in front of them!!

"i was scammed by a funny sounding foreigner over the phone because he told me my daughter was kidnapped on holiday in Bulgaria! at the time she was sitting next to me on the sofa..but I gave them my bank details anyway!!"

time that people in this country started taking responsibility for their own fekkin stupidity instead of laying the blame on everyone else!

Yes our government is full of monkey grabbing buttholes that only care about themselves...but hey! WE KNOW THAT!! all the more reason to understand their ways and be sure you do what you need to!

Not sure how many people will use the system but i remember server overloads most time new things start .

Soon you will need a pc or smart phone even if you dont want one "online" is fine until the second some smart chinese kid breaks into the system and copies every bit of info on it and sells it to the highest bidder ,its bad enough the dvla flog it already to others.

I like tech but the worst thing you can ever do is hang your dirty washing in public because some will surely pinch it

Unfortunately the suckers that implement all this tech are bribed or stupid (probably both) when the seller says its secure

The old guy i help with his pc go a bit worried with "people reading my pc" and asked how to stop them ,i simply said burn your hub and buy good locks for your door but better still dont put anything on it you dont want see

This is an example of tech pointlessness ,its not the 1940's any more ,i want an answer NOW if they insist on tech then i expect them to use it to my advantage otherwise whats the point

I sometimes think that the folk who prefer to deal with machines rather than people, have underlying issues with society/relationships. They seem to want to live their lives in some 'cyber world' where instead of facing up to real people, they can just log off for a while. Me? I'm proud to be a bit of a Luddite/technophobe, I prefer face to face contact with real flesh and blood people. I prefer something concrete and tactile, like a piece of paper, that can't be hacked, lost maybe if I'm not careful, but not changed without my knowledge. I prefer a less artificial world, not one where I pretend to be someone else battling monsters in some pretend universe concocted in the mind of some sad little person, who struggles to exist in this one.

I suppose it's like those who cast a bait into a greatly overstocked pond, and pretend that it's fishing/angling.

Not all change is good change, either for the the system that's been changed, or those that are forced to use it.

But, each to their own.

i am very wary of tech it can get you in deep doodo if you trust it 100%

i use my card to withdraw cash and spend that theres to many scammers out there using tech to hijack tect ,even my card has a nice envelope that stops naughty people taking money from it remotely ?

in the case of gov tech its installed with promisses it rarely meets (brown envelopes and winks i expect),run by idiots who cannot use it under the promise it will save money ,it usually does nothing but punish the people on the outside trying to use it

the car tax dd may work now but will it when you change the vehicle will it be a painless instant changeover or hellthank goodness its a dd not anything else! i expect your bank details are already heading east ?

the issue isn't the tech...its the idiots who don't know how to use it or who cant be bothered to understand the changes put in place. regardless of whether its been put in place for good reasons or not!

the fact is, in this situation, as with the Tax disc situation, the change will occur and we have to deal with it.

but if you stick your head in the sand and don't try to understand it, then it will bite you, very hard, in the arse!

my point isn't about the tech or over reliance on it etc

my point is that we have a society that now choose to blame everybody else apart from ourselves!

we see it health and safety, we see it accident claims, we see it where people are too fekking dumb to realise someone on the end of the phone telling them their pc has a virus is scamming them out of money!

I catch Watchdog and suchlike occasionally and truly, honestly wonder how some people make it through the day without cutting their own heads off with a tin opener!! let alone being allowed out in public!!

im fine with not trusting tech...im fine with being cautious and having tangible bits and bobs etc etc

what im not fine with is people laying the blame firmly in systems or other people when the rules, the instructions, the logical steps to follow, are laid out in clear black and white for all to read and understand!

as for my DD for car tax...far as I can tell...by reading about it....you stop one car, get a refund if youre entitled and start another. the fact I pay monthly might just mean I lose out on a months payment if I change halfway through the month...which is no different at all to if I had changed with a tax disc!!

as for preferring tech to people? last time I looked my pc wont stab be in the back or **** me over for some money! that's always something a person will do!! they might use tech to do it; but in the end its the persons fault!

do I have trouble socialising? yep

ive met the public...scary bunch!! (as no doubt I am to them)

as for the over stocked pond analogy:

I wouldn't fish in a over stocked pond and then write to the owner complaining I caught to much either!!

in the same way if im too stupid to read something and understand it, or learn how to use it, or take care online, or keep my passwords safe then I have nobody to blame but myself!

I'm glad you liked my little 'rant' Kiri, and it got your soapbox back out of the cupboard. :D

It's all well and good classing those who struggle with modern tech as being 'dumb idiots', but there are people who genuinely do have a problem, either through age, mental problems, confidence, or even lack of education. To class them all under the 'dumb idiot' banner, smacks of elitism, and of course the 'stuff you Jack, I'm alright' attitude that's prevalent in much of todays society.

I've watched 'Watchdog', and similar programmes, and seen that those who get scammed usually fall into a small number of categories. The aged, who don't understand, and then trust that the scammers won't fiddle them. The greedy who think that they are getting more for their money, until the real cost is discovered. Those who are brainwashed by commercialism/advertising, into thinking that they need to upgrade their 'product' to keep pace with technology. Those who trust a tradesman will actually do the job he's been hired to do. To the scammer, all these are 'dumb idiots', ripe for the picking.

I don't think I'm a complete idiot, (others might disagree), but I struggle sometimes with on line stuff, and prefer to talk to a person, preferably one who speaks the same language as me.

At present I'm trying to sort out my private pension, both on line and by phone. It's a 'mine field', with information overload facing you at every turn. I'm getting there, by speaking to an actual person, who I can question any time during the conversation, and get an instant reply, not wait for an email, or be directed to a FAQ section, that doesn't have exactly what I want to know.

As for the car tax thing. When you sold a car with some tax already on it, the new owner took over the tax along with the car. Now it's you that the tax is attached to, so any full months tax remaining can be reclaimed, but the new owner can't legally drive it until he's taxed it. So it means at least one extra action, possibly more, by the DVLA in applying the new tax to the new owner/s, and a pain in the backside for the new owners in having to sort the new tax out, before they can insure and legally drive it.

Plus anyone hiring a car abroad will have problems with the new system, because the new code thing only lasts 72 hours. It's going to be fun if you want to hire a car for the second week of a holiday.

Is that progress?

Tax discs and post offices - it was a 19th century solution when it was introduced in the early 20th century.

All this issuing of physical fishing licences needs the same shake-up. I'd happily pay that by direct debit too, and never have to think about it again!

John.

dont make it personal, I wasn't aiming anything at you.

and again, I'm well aware or people that genuinely struggle with genuine reasons.

But, systems are in place to help them. And you can still call the DVLA and you can authorise the hire company to do so on your behalf!

So what's the issue?

It's knee jerk reaction to change that will be, eventually, inevitable!

I also prefer to talk to a person; you can't beat it, you really can't.

But again you've twisted the view point! You don't RELY on a system and hope it works without your knowledge.

You make the choice to check, to talk and not overly trust it!

That's how it should be...if people don't understand, ask...so people learn!

If people don't ask, people don't learn, people don't WANT to understand it then people will be harming only one person! Themselves!

As for car hiring, why? Why is that second week an issue? The article clearly states you can authorise the hire company to access your record. You can get a code online. I'm not aware of many countries that don't have phones or Internet access of sime description!

Let alone a genuine hire car company! In fact the hire companies will likely have systems in place specifically to remove the very issue you raise! It's in their best interests to do so!

As for my soapbox...it's good to talk! It's what forums are for isn't it!
