grass cutting time, lawnmower wanted.

My last lawnmower lasted 30 odd years, looking for a petrol driven 20'' cut rotary, not a cylinder, not looking to pay out thousands for them posh Hondas, but 300 quid should get me something to last a while. don't go much on steel or plastic decks, me ali one has outlasted even the grass it's been cutting.

 

Fair play to the existing briggs and stratton motor, even that is still working and none smoking,apart from fuel starvation. anyone make use of it before it's left out the front for the scrap man to collect?

 

anyone got one for sale or has it got to be a new one?

my tip is to look at the main shaft ,if its like the crap mountfield we had if it has a aluminium sheath over it it means the shaft is so thin its not strong enough to take the long grass and the sheath stops it flexing ,ours went through 3 of those sheaths in the warrany period and when it failed after the warranty was up i wasnt going o fork out £30 for a crap bit of short lived alloy !

the other mountfield we had was far tougher ,could cut anything didnt have this sheath but lacked a grass box hense the new one

hondas will cost more but are great machines but i am talking about those made in the 80's (generally if you can rev the crap out of it its good) i have no doubt like everything else quality has gone down to hayter levels (overprice underpowerwd rubbish)

now we have a small garden its a flymo and five minutes and a nice cold cider looking at the ease compared to petrol

Yup, mine was a mountfield and the only time I ever had to get underneath it was to change the oil, rarely and sharpen the blade with a disc cutter, couldn't get the bu@@er off. long grass my garden is renown for it, so set at the highest level, it has never been a problem for it.

my missus does the rear 130 foot, as I don't like to dodge her dogs crap in among the long grass.

 

And I toil over the front area, 55 foot. so I do delegate.

Cousin of mine owns a big landscaping Firm over here, swears by the Makita Petrol Mowers.

 

A Friend works at a hire Company, they only hire out Makitas, Ali Deck, decent motor & guarantee. Customers generally hire them to abuse them on overgrown ground and they keep on going with a bit of care.

sorted, went to the co that sold me the original mower, told them I was most disappointed that it only lasted 30 odd years. Bought one, and he even told me to bring the old one back as he has use of the engine bits. Result really as I was going to leave it out for the scrap man, and he allowed 25 quid off.
