All,

 

I need some opinions on the University of Birmingham. My wife is considering a PhD in linguistics to complement her existing curriculum vitae. Plus she is a compulsive student. Is this institution held in very high esteem?

 

I would like to hear your dialogue comments

It doesn't have the kudos of Oxford or Cambridge but it is a proper university (rather than a jumped up polytechnic) with a longstanding reputation for excellence in several fields.

I used to teach there (which is nowhere near as impressive as it sounds because I was a guest instructor at one of the student martial arts clubs) but I've not been on the campus in a decade or so.

Not so sure about it's current academic reputation but it certainly pulls in no shortage of foreign students, with large numbers from China.

They have one in Alabama, one in Iowa, one in Michigan, one in Missouri, one in New Jersey, one in Ohio and one in Pennsylvania.
