UK Cancer Drugs Fund nearly messes it up for AN member

In the last few days I have started taking a different chemo drug, Everolimus, which hopefully is going to slow or stop the growth of the cancer that has appeared where my right kidney used to be. For those that haven't read my blogs, I had this kidney removed in March last year as it was found to have a 10cm cancerous tumour in it.

If my consultant had waited just another 8 weeks before making the decision to switch me from my previous treatment, I would not have been able to have this different drug. From 4th November it is being removed for the UK Cancer Drugs Fund list and will no longer be offered to kidney cancer patients as a 2nd line treatment option. At this current time, there are no other options available, so I would have been stuffed, probably literally!

Hi

I hope this treatment does the business for you. It is sad to see decisions like this being taken on the basis of cost. There are more important criteria, particularly if you are the patient.

It does make me wonder how such an impoverished public purse finds 100 billion (or more) to waste on an obsolete system like Trident, just for the prestige of being able to say "we are a nuclear power", so we can play with the big boys. I think I prefer healthy power to nuclear power myself.

BTW, I know that France is a nuclear power, that's a waste of money as well. The difference is that in France potentially life saving medicines are not rationed.

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.

I am sceptical that there is any health system which does not ration to some extent - the funds available are never unlimited and the demand always is, how otherwise can they prioritise?

Umm - not good - presumably as they've started you on this it will continue beyond Nov?

C.

Yes, now that I am on the treatment, it will continue as long as the 3-monthly scans show it is working. At this current time there are no suitable drug trials that I could join if a scan showed negative results, so no plan C....yet.
