Sorry to read you have had a bad trip. Did you discuss your dissapointment with the skipper before posting on a public forum, i'm sure that he would have viewed the situation differently to you and would have given you a reasonable explanation of why it didn't happen. You have just learned the difference between fishing and catching. Even defra would like to know how to say for certain there's ling down there or cod, it would save a huge amount of discard.

During the course of a year i have quite a few trips cancelled due to mainly weather situations, it is the skippers decision even if the likes of us weather experts think differently. Sometimes you get on the boat full of expectation and it does not happen, although dissapointing it does not stop you from trying again, surly.

This year there already has been notable catches made with this boat, posted on here, so i would again have to say thats fishing. There has already on here been a huge amount of postings with regards to how good the inshore cod fishing has become up there, again i have to say that thats fishing. One minute they are there the next there not.

Thank you for your sympathetic thoughts Barry

First and foremost i believe the skipper is well aware of the situation and i do know that their partner Des is fully aware

As for learning the difference between fishing and catching i think i should point out every angler on this trip was experianced some like myself have been fishing for the last forty odd years so ithink we just might know the difference by now

We also know your line has to be in the water and not on the deck to catch fish

If i wanted to go on a cruise around the north sea i would book one with P&O or Cunard

As you and i both know with wreck fishing in the north sea and with prior experiance

once you have caught off the head of cod from a wreck and the ling start to show that is the time to move on unles you are targeting LING

If you viewed their website it does say Quote My job is taking anglers drift fishing in the North Sea, mainly over wrecks, and mostly targeting cod Unquote

With this in mind the skipper should target the required species as this trip we were targeting cod and he should do his utmost to give his paying customers what they require

George knew that a particular wreck was stuffed full with ling as he had fished it a month before

If i had wanted to target Ling then i would have booked a specialist trip targeting them which they also offer.

Marting comment Quote They are working on JB's reputation and not living up to it!!! Unquote

Seems to me to be correct other than changing a few words on the website the rest is from the previous skipper which clearly the current owners are either not prepared or cannot deliver someone elses promises on the services offered

Perhaps they shoud re-wright the web site in their own words and just wright up what they can deliver in the way of services instead of what the previous skipper could .

This particular trip was also stacked with other problems before leaving the dockside

I believe the Chieftains C.O.P is for 12 persons plus 3 crew

on this occasion we had 8 from our party and what apparently should have been 7 from another party however one droped out the maths

equates out to 14 anglers and 3 crew

This Is above the C.O.P and i assume if things had gone wrong at sea the boat and liability insurance would have been Null and Void

Perhaps this is why the skipper wanted to head home at the first threat of any sort of weather that could possibly come his way

The extra anglers created untold problems with anglers fishing closer together tangles were horrendous

and at meal times all anglers could not be seated in the mess room and some had to eat outside on the deck

With regards to filleting services offered when the crewman dissapears for two hours while anglers are fishing on deck it is no wonder he cannot keep up

and then at the fare paying anglers disgust the fish that has spoiled is thrown over the side

fish that an angler has paid good money to catch

All i can say is that you had a bad trip.

Throughout the very short time i have got to know John Brennan and George , what i can definately say is this........... the pair of them work their socks off to get you fish , and George maybe even more so . With George having a little less knowledge of John (but still a very good skipper) of the boat in question George (IMO) is trying his absolute best to provide the anglers with what they want. As for Eddy............well all i can say is ditto. In all the trips i've had with the new owners this year EVERY SINGLE TRIP has been most enjoyable , with fish (COD) jumping aboard. The only downside (if you can call it that ) is.........on one trip when the boat was a crewman down , John Brennan took the helm of the boat and George filleted for us. Subsequently , the fishing was AGAIN fantastic (as it always is) , but George was overwhelmed with fish to fillet , so i got the knife out / broke off from fishing and got stuck into the filleting for 20 mins here , 30 mins there. But i didn't mind (it was a welcomed break from pulling all the fish up)

Just my honest humble opinion.

Hi Karl and all.

I have read this thread with interest, I find it hard to comment on something I have not witnessed (George’s operation) but I can see that there have obviously been some bad trips.

I would firstly say (in Georges defence) and not having to of personally had to be aboard the boat to of witnessed. Is that we have had a crap summer weather wise.

People who go on these long trips pay an or full lot of money and expect more than inclement weather and because of that weather where you are allowed to fish.

An inshore short unproductive day is much easier to forget compared with a 3 or 4 day expensive unproductive trip.

You can afford to run a business that allows for cancellations as long as you don’t have to cancel too many because you know that the weather is going to be unkind to your anglers.

I to have read some good reports about fishing earlier in the year with George (when the weather was much more settled) and therefore there was more chance of comfortable productive fishing on the offshore grounds.

As for the filleting etc I cannot comment because I have-not obviously witnessed any of it, or the food come to that.

I hope George will learn as he goes along the same as john Michele and I learned.

We learned from our mistakes and we learned a lot from our customers. Be it from forums like this or from feedback and suggestions we got on board during our trips.

Hope you all have more prosperous trips in the future.

Take care all.

Regards.

So what's your point Barry???. People are not allowed a to air their views!!. Thought that's what a forum was for.

Sorry Marting, i missed this otherwise i would have replied earlier, don't think i said people are not allowed to air their views, it's good that there is a balanced view, but with regards to fairplay it would be good if it is discussed with the skipper as well to get his side of the issue don't you think, before he and his business are castigated on a public forum. What if your side of what happened is found to be incorrect, it would be a bit late to backtrack then. Still sorry you had a bad trip Jaffa.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

Thanks very much Barry.

The long range forecasts are up and down at the moment , and i can't seem to get a realistic idea yet if we're gonna be fishing. I'll wait for the countryfile forecast on sunday morning (it's not accurate, not by a long shot , but it usually gives a ball park idea of the coming weeks weather)

My favorite skipper from weymouth phoned and said do i want to go on a 15 hour rod bending conger trip this saturday, after checking the long range for this weekend, my answer was, does the pope pray.

Fingers crossed.
