Voice-activated software

For a while now I have been using Dragon NaturallySpeaking software to dictate to my computer rather than type. As I've got older I have got fat finger syndrome and my typing is getting worse all the time.

At the moment I'm using DNS 13 which is the latest manifestation and all I can say is if you're not using it, why not? I find it excellent.

By the way this was written by dictation with no corrections.

I guess it must be a pretty mature product by now. I used to support it some 20 years ago when it was sold as Dragon Dictate. Even then it was able to cope with my wesat coast of Scotland accent. Do they still bundle a decent Plantronics head set with it? Early versions did not work properly without a half decent microphone.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Hi Corey

I've been using it since about DNS 8 and I'm now on 13 which is far and away the best. It makes very very few mistakes.

I got it electronically so couldn't say about the headset. Back a few years ago they were supplying a headset but it was a pretty cheap affair. I use a fairly middle-of-the-road headset that I can't remember the name of but it works fine. Unless you are a very good typist in the software will be the best money you spent for a long time.

used it when it was version 9 when I took an interest in voice recognition while doing some of my own programming.

never did get any benefit from it as I can type pretty quickly. ended up doing my own program in vb6 (those were the days  ) to open programs and read stuff out using text to speech to try and make something like on star trek with talking to the computer.

it worked well but the novelty wore off pretty quickly.

I write for a living and with Dragon I can get an awful lot more done with a lot fewer corrections to worry about. Dragons spelling is better than mine as well. :clap3:

  • 2 weeks later...

as somone whos had a total laryngectomy, voice activated software can be a nightmare. the ford sync on my handsfree for the car will recognice my voice, but ocasionally trys to call some random contacts rather than the one i just requested  .having no voicebox creates its own issues but can be fun at times
