Sea Fishing Licence - would you pay?

Most of you here will most likely be aware of the Governments proposals to bring in a 'Sea Fishing Licence' :o or to be more precise a 'Rod Licence' since it will not apply to hand lines. Although still in its early stages in Parliament, it is making progress and no doubt with every bit of bad news in the country this will be slipped through in the hope nobody notices. As a tackle shop owner I'm not happy about this, and I wouldn't expect you to be too happy either.

This will affect every fisherman fishing with a rod, even people that just fish one week a year, I do not expect to say "that'll be another £25 for your licence Sir" when I sell a rod n' reel combo for £40.00 for their weeks holiday (no doubt it will fall on the shops to sell the licence). Boat anglers will also be stung for this charge, so there's no escaping.

We all know this will be an impossible piece of legislation to police, but no doubt (like the 'Smoking Police', yes they do exist - I had a visit from them in my shop  ) we will have 'Fishing Licence Police' making examples of people (pensioners would be considered easy prey).

Aside from the holiday trade, my year round customers will expect something in return for their hard earned cash. Looking at this forum you all seem to be well seasoned year round anglers and know your stuff. So, if Gordon 'nomates' Brown wants to relieve you of your cash, what would you expect in return, IF he gets his way.

They tried this in Portugal and virtually killed sea angling in less than a year

Your comments please guys :)

The did it in the States on an option basis so that some coastal states have a license and some do not.

Guess where the best shore and close inshore fishing is. If you guess that license = better fishing you will be correct.

The money does go into improving habitat and similar conservation measures and on that basis, it would seem to be a good thing.

Portugal is where 50% of the monies collected goes to a commercial fund, so not a lot of hope that any money is left over for the sport, time expences are taken out of the rest. Also there is a massive decrease in the take up of the licence, somewhere in the range of 180,000 out of 450,000

of these 40,000 are spear fisherman. I can see why the tackle shop owner rightly has a great concern in the uk. Nervous times ahead.

Welcome Fastrantiger. Where you based :)

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

not sure if having a licence to beach fish between high and low tides (where lots is done) would be legal since i believe that bit of beach belongs to the queen so casting into it is her concern not the governments but using a structure (jetty or pier) could be "taxed" merely by having to pay a fee to use it.

boat fishing though would be difficult because you would need officials in boats making sure you are fishing outside the "limits" but ofcourse huge fines could be got by taking you to court charged with "going equipped" to fish illegally as you putt putted out of langstone the impossible onus on you to prove you were going outside the limits to fish.

i have been sea fishing 3 times this year all resulting in nothing (to take home) if a yearly fee was needed to fish it would be grossly unfair to those who only go occasionally and impossible to back up with plods on the ground checking if permits were held it would be like the dog licence far more expensive to run even more ludicrous to think "spare" cash would improve fishing!

Also what makes me cry is the fairness of the system, commercially they were given their licence free by the gov, now commercial have turned that into a multi mill business, now there is only weak proposels to charge them a licence over the rsa on the grounds that it would be an unfair on commercial, regards other eu countries. So gov uk should hand out the rsa free licences. That would be transparent of them. :)

If they run it on the lines of the fresh water one, more than a third of the yearly budjet spent is funded by the ratepayer, as the licence money does not cover the costs.

In a word - YES

And happily, provided that it is part of a package of measures designed to provide "a better sea angling experience" - including more and bigger fish.

If they try and introduce the licence before any other measure then NO

I would only pay if DEFRA gave me something for my money, like more and bigger fish. To provide these more and bigger fish DEFRA would probably have to restrict commercial effort inshore.

So bottom line is no I would not pay an sea angling tax with things as they are today!

And yes they did do it i the state but they also put in place decent managment plans like with the stripped bass. A wide range of tools are needed for successful fisheries manament like slot sizes and bag limits for commercial fishermen who chose to use rod and line. They also restrict the time the fishery is open to nets men to somthing like a week.
