What a night

I almost had fish and chips for dinner tonight. Not too exciting I suppose but this was the first chip shop fish and chips for almost 6 years and I was really looking forward to it.

I was on chip 3 when one of our young cat came wandering in, holding in his mouth a large toad, which he obligingly dropped at my feet. A not uncommon occurrence, apart from the toad bit.

Many, if not all, toads exude a toxin through the skin when threatened and this one was no exception. The cat started drooling and frothing at the mouth, although otherwise it seemed OK.

A rapid check on Google on signs and symptoms of toad toxicity started with drooling/ frothing so a call to the emergency vet while my wife tried to wash out the cat's mouth and then a 15 min drive down a very steep and very twisty mountain road to get to the vets.

Thankfully, after a little treatment he was pronounced OK and home to the cold fish and chips. Could have been worse I suppose.

We had considered things like snakes, scorpions and even 10" centipedes, but toads?

Hopefully the cat learned its lesson but I wouldn't bet on it. Did you make a note of the treatment for next time?

I too hope he has learned a lesson.

The strange thing is we used to have many toads in the garden in France and the dogs and cats just ignored them..

It seems that the Toads in Andalusia have been responsible for the deaths of quite a few dogs and cats.
