All round float rod

Hi guys ??, after 2 years with my John Wilson Avon rod I've decided to part ways with my loyal workhorse...I've decided to surf the web a bit for a new rod I want this new float rod to last me forever.

I do a lot of canal fishing for silver fish however I also do a lot of commercial stuff mostly around 7-10 lb but sometimes getting to odd big one. Essentially I'm looking for an all rounder, something perfect for skimmers and silverfish but just as good for big tench and carp etc.

I'm soooo close to buying the Drennan Matchpro Ultralight 13ft but it's maximum line capacity is 4lb which could be too light (correct me if I'm wrong guys)

I'm open to pleanty of recommendations cheers !

I currently own three rods that I can recommend for both silver fish and Carp on the float.

13ft Drennan Tench Float rod - recommended reel lines of between 3lb up to 8lb - 3 piece.

13ft Drennan Tench and Specimen Float rod - recommended reel lines of between 3lb up to 7lb - 2 piece plus handle extension (can be carried ready made up and folded in two in the supplied rod sleeve)

15ft Hardy Marksman Specialist Float rod - recommended reel lines of between 3lb up to 5lb plus - 4 piece.

I have a 13ft Drennan Acolyte Ultra Light float rod but although I have had a couple of accidental Barbel on it; I wouldn't intentionally use it for Barbel or Carp fishing as I don't think it was really made for this kind of pressure.

I have 2 ultralites in 13 and 14ft. For canals they'll be perfect and can genuinely support hook-lengths down to 1lb. They will be too light for commercials and bigger stuff - from experience you will struggle to stop carp over 5/6lbs from taking you all over the lake. I also have the stepped up version called Ultralite Matchpro 13' which is a beautiful rod and I use for trotting on the river when I can realistically expect barbel and it deals with them fine. You can get the Matchpro on ebay sometimes. It's not overpowered when catching roach and I have regularly had carp up to 19lbs off my local lake - 5lb line and a 4lb bottom.

I did have another Drennan rod, sadly nicked form my garage, Series 7 Competition in 13ft and that would also be ideal for your needs. It was allegedly designed for commercials and is pretty similar to the Matchpro but being series 7 is not quite so refined - again I've taken big carp on it while fishing for whatever has come along. Again ebay.

There are a ton of rods out there for what you need and they aren't big money - any medium float rod will do the trick - Korum make a decent range CS series 13ft looks perfect for £50 new.

I agree with Matthew, I've got the Matchpro Ultralite in 14', and while it's a lovely rod for trotting for smaller fish, it's too light for tench and carp. It's a bit of a specialist tool.

I'm surprised that Chris Plumb hasn't replied yet......I'll do so on his behalf - I can hear everybody groaning because they know what's coming.

You need look no further than the Harrison GTi, a bit old now and so not as light as say the Drennan Acolyte but in my opinion a superb all round float rod, budget around £200 for a new one. I use the 15' hollow tip version for trotting but it's equally at home on stillwater, shorter versions are available I think. It's landed 10lb carp and more recently an 8lb barbel in a fastish flow but it's versatile enough to deal with silvers without bumping them off. I've looked at Acolytes and been tempted (they weigh next to nothing) but I always reach the conclusion that for all round float fishing the GTi is very hard to beat. It's robust as well, a lot of my fishing involves roaming around overgrown venues and inevitably there are a few tree prodding mishaps, it's survived so far.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

I'll keep my eyes out for one buddy
