Just watched a film per chance called 'The Finest Hours' Chris Pine, Casey Aflek and Ben Foster, I take all films with a pinch of salt, but a really good film based on the true events involving a Coast Guard station in a small fishing village in Mass. USA in the 1950's, Bravery bordering on impossible.

You have to take it all with a pinch of salt ,when the latest titanic film was made a survivor was asked if it was close to the truth (i think she was a babe in arms at the time but must have spoken to older survivors later in life) "they at least spelt my name correctly" was all she said ,so theres a great difference i expect to what really happened to the interpretation and scripting etc of hollywood ,what next americans finding enigma machines on subs LOL

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

Its far easier to curse the darkness than light one candle

Thanks for the head's up. I'll give that one a look if I get the chance.

I'm waiting for the Hollywood remake of Dunkirk, where the plucky boat owners leave Nantucket to save the not-so-plucky Brits from certain death whilst at the same time hunting down a notorious U-boat captain and thus saving an Atlantic convoy on its way to England carrying the latest secret weapon, the atom bomb.

Or the Dam Busters remake with B-17 Flying Fortresses (Group Captain Hank Gibsons' dog is called Whitey....).

You cynical blighters, like I said, I take the screenplay with a pinch of salt, but the story itself is well recorded in fact and deserving of being cast into film, which as we all know is sadly how most people learn history! I well remember it being reported that film goers on being questioned what they thought of the movie Titanic said various differences on the fact that they should have been informed before going that the ship sank!

On another point, watching the film Tobruk with my mate Peter who was there saying afterwards, "That was rubbish, we didn't have Tommy guns"!

Really depends how purist you wish to be, but like I said, heroism above and beyond which is fitting to be marked 60 years later and should have been done sooner. The film, like I said was enjoyable, the story nothing short of bloody fantastic which had not come into my knowledge before so I am grateful. Go to the naughty step both of you, Newt I hope you get to see it and can comment for me at a later date.

And for that little jib, might I remind you that Audie Murphy was amongst the highest decorated Soldiers of WWII, who was awarded EVERY award or citation for bravery from the US, French and Belgiam Gov.

You may mock but apparently in the dam busters remake that is currently planned/underway (directed by peter Jackson and scripted by Stephen fry) they've renamed the dog although not to the name suggested here (warning link contains naughty words) http://www.newsbiscuit.com/2011/06/13/dam-busters-dog-renamed-cuntface-for-movie-remake/ Edited by snakey1

I did hear that Christopher Nolan offered William Shatner a major role in his upcoming WW2 movie.

Shatner turned him down saying "Dunkirk".

One film I watched, "American Gangster", was based on fact..."Based" is the operative word...

Depictions in Media

The story of Roberts' investigation and prosecution of Frank Lucas was adapted into the 2007 film American Gangster, starring Academy Award-winning actors Denzel Washington portraying Lucas and Russell Crowe portraying Roberts. The film grossed more than US$127 million[16] and was met with generally positive reviews.[17] However, several persons involved with the actual events regarding the investigation and prosecution (including Lucas and Roberts) have criticized the film as a largely fictional and exaggerated portrayal that contained inaccuracies and fabrication.[18]

The film portrays Roberts as being mired in a personal child custody battle and that this aspect of his personal life was compromised by his dogged investigation of Lucas. This was entirely fabricated as Roberts never had a child.[18] Roberts also criticized the portrayal of Lucas by describing it as "almost noble".[18]

Comparatively, Sterling Johnson, Jr., a federal judge who served as a special narcotics prosecutor and assisted the arrest and trial of Lucas, described the film as "one percent reality and ninety-nine percent Hollywood." In addition, Johnson described the real life Lucas as "illiterate, vicious, violent, and everything Denzel Washington was not."[19] Former Drug Enforcement Administration agents filed a lawsuit against Universal Studios saying that the events in the film were fictionalized and that the film defamed them and hundreds of other agents.[20]
