Australia is a big place. The Brecon Beacons can do all of that on a day in August.

The Aussie extreme that surprised me the most was waking up to a frost in Queensland when we were far enough north to be close to or over the tropic line. The locals even had pictures of snow.

I haven't been back for a while but I did enjoy having the Aussies bleat on about "The Harsh Australian Climate" only to laugh in their face and ask "Where's the harshest climate in Australia then?".

The inevitable reply was "The Simpson Desert" and I'd ask how long the Simpson would take to kill you if you were dumped there without the right gear. The consensus seems to be somewhere between 2 and 4 days.

The poor boys ere so crestfallen when I pointed out that the same scenario in the Brecons might kill you in 40 minutes.

Wet, cold and windy is a bad combination - a combination responsible with both of my close calls with hypothermia.

That's not bad weather, that's wrong clothes.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

I have seen a frost in Hall's Creek in the Kimberlies.

Now that's impressive - but clear skies and low humidity is all it takes.

I don't recall exactly where we encountered the frost but we were high up in the GDR on a trip that took in Nimbin, The Black Stump, Carnarvon Gorge, the Stockman's hall of fame, the QANTAS Museum and a shedload of wide open vistas.

Caught Yellowbelly and Spangled Perch and got very frustrated watching big cod chasing yabbies' in the shallows and not being able to get them to bite.

When it's two or three degrees, with horizontal sleet, the only right cloths are PJ's, with an outer layer of bricks.
