Recent Piking

Hi All,

Just thought I would post a few pics from my recent piking exploits. Nothing amazing size wise but it is something that has given me a bit of a new vigour as the cold weather sets in. My first proper trip with deadbaits was around a week ago. I decided I would fish a dead bait rod all day and also use lures near the bait. This was to be on the river but after about 3 hours of catching nothing but leaves on the river I decided to up sticks and go to the canal.

It proved to be a good move as after working my way half way up where I had planned to end up I had a small jack to the spinner. It was only about 3lbs but it cheered me up on a cold day.

I then made my way down to the spot I expected to have the best chance on the deadbait casting in and waiting 10-15 minutes before walking another 20 yards as I walked. It was about half an hour before dark when I heard a slight click from the bait runner followed by a slow clicking as the fish moved off with the bait. I struck into it and had a decent fish on the other end. I was made up. My first pike caught to a static deadbait. It went 9lbs on the scales and gave me a massive smile on my face. I cast back in again but had no further action. I had a good chat to a local farmer before making my way back to the car in the dark. He was surprised to see the size of the fish from what is really a little fished bit of canal.

Fast forward to this sunday just gone and I was back out again. This time with my nephew in tow. He had seen my picture of the pike and wanted to try his hand at catching one himself. I set him up on a ledgered roach and he cast it under a bridge. We sat and waited and after a while I noticed a definite plucking on the end of his rod. No line had been taken or anything. I assumed maybe an eel was picking at it. Not long after it stopped. After 5 minutes we brought the rod in to find the roach was gone. We rebaited and cast back into the same spot. This time it was just 5 minutes or so before the rod tip started moving again. I told him to get ready and as soon as the indicated dropped off I told him to strike. He immediately hooked into another nice pike. He enjoyed a great scrap and I netted it for him. He was buzzing with excitement. We weighed it and rested it and set it free. It went 7lbs on the nose. We didnt have any more that day despite trying loads of different spots and different baits but it didnt matter. He wont forget that one in a hurry!

I miss piking my son and i always made an effort to go and freeze our nuts off watching little happen but usually had some sport

Now hes 700 miles away its difficult

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

Its far easier to curse the darkness than light one candle

There is a fair amount of watching nothing happen but so worth the effort when somethings bites :) I am quite lucky really that my nephew has got into fishing as before that it was just me as most of my mates show willing but then let me down at the last minute. The nephew has had his first barbel and first pike with me this year and he has loved it. His dad works a lot so doesnt get much time to do stuff with him so it both gives me company and allows him to do things he may not otherwise do :)
