I thought I had a decent handle on the worlds various fish groups but I've no clue what this is.

Species caught in 2020: Barbel. European Eel. Bleak. Perch. Pike.

Species caught in 2019: Pike. Bream. Tench. Chub. Common Carp. European Eel. Barbel. Bleak. Dace.

Species caught in 2018: Perch. Bream. Rainbow Trout. Brown Trout. Chub. Roach. Carp. European Eel.

Species caught in 2017: Siamese carp. Striped catfish. Rohu. Mekong catfish. Amazon red tail catfish. Arapaima. Black Minnow Shark. Perch. Chub. Brown Trout. Pike. Bream. Roach. Rudd. Bleak. Common Carp.

Apparently, from a group known as "Amblyopinae" - a subfamily of elongated mud-dwelling gobies commonly called eel gobies or worm gobies.

Riight.

According to Joseph Nelson's "Fishes of the World" some ten genera, worldwide distribution, favouring large estuaries and lower reaches of rivers.

 

Wiki says 12 genera https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amblyopinae

 

Have not come across any of that group myself . Nor wish to - it looks like an anorexic and manic wels.
