wifi conundrum

Sometimes my laptop (fully up to date Win 10) drops the wifi connection. Other devices remain connected. I have powered the laptop off and restarted to no avail. Powering the router off/on cures the problem. Any ideas folks

Mine has problems with the 5Ghz dropping but the other frequency is fine my biggest problem is the extender loses the hub but connecting to the hub itself cures that ,its shamefull in the 21st century you need an extender when your hub is 12ft away i can actually get a bigger signal from the chap two doors away than my hub

A recent windows update has been messing up with internet connections (dhcp not working) supposed to be fixed now.

Theres also been a rise in attacks against routers to find vulnerabilities in them. Mines has also been acting a bit screwed up lately with a barrage of attacks on some port i cant recall ( http://arstechnica.co.uk/security/2016/11/notorious-iot-botnets-weaponize-new-flaw-found-in-millions-of-home-routers/ )

Can't help on this one. I don't use laptops when I can help it and I always use copper to my router.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Make sure you're using a secured mode (with password) to connect to the wifi, that'll rule out other users sponging on your wifi.

Ensure the lap-top is only using wifi or ethernet connection to the hub, not both. Windows can only handle one IP address per device. Two connections can cause problems.

Do any of the other users of your wifi use a fixed IP? If they do, you might be getting booted off when a fixed IP joins the network, which clashes with the DHCP one you've been assigned.

I have all you say covered. I am running a wifi router from a Virgin hub, the hub is fine, but it is the router giving cause for concern, although it hasn't happened since Christmas, Before it was every few days, so I am keeping my fingers crossed

That's inaccurate. Windows fully supports multihoming. The Windows IP stack can support multiple NICs in one PC and can also support multiple IP addresses bound to one NIC.

What is this "Virgin hub"? Don't you have a Virgin Media Super Hub? If so why are you using another router?
