The only way he can be "excused" before the end of his term in office is congressional impeachment. The President of the United States cannot break the law. And, if he was accused and convicted he has the exclusive power of pardon - including himself.

Once Trump leaves office, however that happens, he can be indicted and charged with any criminal offence he has committed.

It's beginning to look like Manafort's only way out will be a Presidential pardon, but that will only apply to the Federal charges.

Step back from American politics briefly. No, the President of the United States cannot break the law. If for no other reason the Secret Service will NOT allow him to be served. He may "excuse" any imprisonment.

 

You were one for three. We don't know for sure about an ex-president as a private citizen. They tried multiple times to indict Nixon to no avail.

I was listening to Trump's NY press conference on YT over my morning coffee. He came out with this gem.

 

"Many people say I have the right to, absolutely, fire him. He said he did not say it, he said he does not believe, and nobody in this room believes it. By the way, I deal with the people in this room. I was with Mike Pompeo before. We were dealing, at a very high level, with Japan.

And I was saying things that nobody in the room even understood, and I said them a long time ago. And I was right. He said, “That’s not the 25th Amendment that I’m looking at.” I think I can say that from Mike."

Reports in NYT indicate that just about everything Trump has ever claimed is lies and that he is a con man and fraudster. And no-one seems to care. They just shrug and say "so what, we knew that anyway"

He is desperately trying to lever a sympathetic ear onto the Supreme Court so that when the dung hits the windmill, as it surely will, there will be someone there to keep him out of jail. And no one cares.

The USA must be one of the most politically corrupt countries on Earth.
