Scented lures

The Flying Tench

Recommended Posts

There's an article in last week's Angling Times where they are fishing a dutch canal for big perch on a very cold day and sport is slow. Then one of them squeezes bloodworm flavoured LAVA attractor into a hole in the lure and from then on he does really well.

Has anyone tried using a flavouring on lures? Did it make any difference?

Scents certainly can help - but it depends on the species. With some it can be a great addition but with others it doesn't seem to make a bit of difference.

For instance, in the US using a scented lure (especially the soft plastics where you want a fish to give a positive strike and hold the lure for as long as possible) does seem very worthwhile for largemouth and smallmouth bass but with pike it does not seem to improve the rate of takes.

My thinking is that using scents might help and certainly should not hurt even if not effective. Given the low cost and lack of a downside, I'd say it would be worth a trial and using your own results to make your decision to use or not. At the very least a scent should help mask the human odor - especially good if one is a smoker.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have some soft plastics that come pre scented but when I fished them side by side with other lures that didnt (for perch) I caught many more on the ones that werent. May have been down to the pattern and action though as the scented were pin tails and the others were paddle tails.

Reaction lures for chub and pike are unlikely to be better with scent. Slow fisbed lures for perch may be a different matter but I tried scents back in the 90's and didn't notice any differece worth the mess - a hook hole in the tu be makes a god awful stink!

I've heard on many occasions that WD-40 sprayed on SEA FISHING Jigs (Pirks) is an attractor.

I would however discourage this on Freshwater as I think it could well prove harmful. (especially on still water & may even act as a repellent!! )

May well have been accidentally stumbled upon by a Sea Angler (Bless Him :boat: ) freeing up a seized up swivel??.
