Echoed ayjay - I fish around 6 - 8 lb also & don't get "Smashed Up" too often with the Beastmaster Margin pole.

Most are lost with Hook pulls. (Barbless 15 inch Quickstops) I've been straightened out with the size 16 to 6 lb Korum ones more times than enough, ( the wire is too fine IMO) so I've changed to Drennan in that size.

Drennan Quickstops use forged rather than the finer wire.

I'm getting better & still learning with the pole, but I'm still often playing fish like I would with a rod (force of habit) I'm pretty sure that's part of it & sinking the pole below the water would reduce the losses - in some cases at least!!

Gizmo Angling have just sent out the much awaited hair rig tyer attachment for the ZT Pro hook tyer. You can find my 'First Impressions' review HERE. However it has got me thinking. Do we really need to tie hairs into spade end hooks when an eyed hook tied with a knotless-knot does the job admirably?

That looks way too over engineered for what it does. A matchman fits in a tacklebox compartment.

Ditto, and at £125-£150 a pop, much more than I could justify for something as mundane as a hook tier!

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Last time this subject came up someone (I think Poledark) suggested we oldtimers could tie on a spade end by hand whilst others were still struggling to get a ready-tied out of the packet (to which one might add "or rummaging around in their tackle box for a hook tier")

Like any knot, if you tie it enough times it becomes second nature.

Guys,

With respect, I think you may have missed the point I was trying to make. I was not so much commenting about the machine itself, these things are like Marmite, you either love 'em or hate 'em.

My main point was: Do we really need to tie hairs into spade end hooks, when an eyed hook tied with a knotless-knot does the job admirably?

I use eyed hooks for hair rigs. I use spade ends for delicate presentation on light lines, and I seldom need a hair for that kind of fishing. Having said that, surely if you want a hair you just don't trim the tag end?

I certainly missed your point Ralph, I just took it as a review of the hook tier.

As to using a spade for hair rigs, I can't see why not. I don't use hair rigs but you can tie the hook with a long tag end, and trim to suit the length of hair you want. I have used the tag end to hold loose pieces of bait, ie, bread, luncheon meat, cheese, etc, to strike them off to get bait into a swim, so I can't see a problem with using it as a hair.

HI John, I probably should have left the bit about the review off the original post but it the new attachment, that got me wondering if there was any advantage to be had.

I am just questioning the need for tying hair rigs to spade end hooks. Is their an advantage to be had?

From what I can gather, and in my own (limited) experience, it seems that an eyed hook is so much easier to tie a hair on so why bother tying hairs on spade hooks?

Is there any point? Just because you can does not meant it is any better - does it?
