Cyclone Debbie

Recommended Posts

Tropical Cyclone "Debbie", a *category 4 cyclone will cross the coast at Bowen, 100 km north of us about 10 AM. The winds are gusting to 180 kmh at Hamilton Island.

We have had 125 mm rain and wind gusts to 120 kmh. but very little damage in our village. The Authorities told residents of Mackay and surrounding low lying areas to evacuate due to a storm surge of up to 2.5 metres on top of a 5.6 m high tide. About 25000 people are affected.

*Category 5 is the most destructive. Debbie is over 450 km wide. Just come over on tv...Wind gusts to 260 kmh at the centre.

Cheers, Bobj.

It's a long time since I last visited but I've been sailing, diving and fishing out from Airlie Beach, so I know the area fairly well. Lets hope everyone took head of the warnings and prepared well and that loss of life is minimal.

From my correspondent in Brisbane.

In real terms Debbie was a blow out ...a bit of rain and wind ...very little real damage.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

My sister-in-law, 15 miles inland of Brisbane says its deluging. Schools are closed because they expect a month's rain in the next 24 hours. The school is near the Brisbane River, which floods.

That's why sensible people build Queenslanders.

Bobj - our Brit friends don't ever get storms of this magnitude and can't really have a feel for the magnitude or overall awesomeness of these critters.

Now now newt we had one in 1987 and my dustbin blew over!

We get lots of stuff but we dont (the brits not the brit press they overhype everything) make a fuss about it ,we had snow once ...it was white! And in 1953 some wellingtons were not high enough!and in 1963 the sea froze a bit ...it was cold.

The difference is if our wooden houses got blown away every couple of years we would build better houses or move ,our insurance people would insist we built better houses by increasing their rates until we did!

Perhaps americans enjoy standing slack jawed scratching their heads wondering where their fine wooden house went ,built exactly the same way on the same spot as the last one that disapeared? There's still significant disruption of services in the Mackay area and there is major flooding as far south as Lismore in NSW.

Hopefully things will normalise soon and we'll hear from Bob.
