Cyclone Debbie

Recommended Posts

Now now newt we had one in 1987 and my dustbin blew over!

We get lots of stuff but we dont (the brits not the brit press they overhype everything) make a fuss about it ,we had snow once ...it was white! And in 1953 some wellingtons were not high enough!and in 1963 the sea froze a bit ...it was cold.

The difference is if our wooden houses got blown away every couple of years we would build better houses or move ,our insurance people would insist we built better houses by increasing their rates until we did!

Perhaps americans enjoy standing slack jawed scratching their heads wondering where their fine wooden house went ,built exactly the same way on the same spot as the last one that disapeared? "Hey Bobby Joe i'm sure i left us house here somewhere " Cletus seems to have lost his as well ,hes up that tree looking fur it "

There is not a lot of difference in insurance costs between timber and brick houses in America chesters, because when the wind speed gets to more than 200 mph it makes not a lot of difference.

Google St. Louis cyclone 1896 and look at the images. Most of the buildings were brick. You don't know what you are talking about. I doubt you've ever experienced weather that made you fear for your life.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Posting the Carlin clip when we don't know whether a member and his family are safe might be considered a tad ...insensitive.

As for "I doubt you've ever experienced weather that made you fear for your life", it's the sort of nonsense that gets said by people who have found themselves in harms way in cyclones, hurricanes, tornadoes and the like and yes, those extreme events are dangerous - but so is a cold, wet and windy day on the river bank or on a hill, and those sorts of conditions kill lots.

I suspect that everyone on his forum will at some point have had hyperthermia creep up on them and feared for their lives when they've realised that neither their brain nor their body is capable of doing what it should.

Up scafell pike for two days ,no wind ,no rain but boy the damp went to your bones ,wont mention fishing trips to nab where the waves hit the mast and knocked the lamp off but that was pleasure but i had the life vest on alnight and sat waiting for the boat not to come back up from the last roll.

But ofcourse being a salty seaman your trips went to places where waves were bigger but i expect the craft was as well

Brick who mentioned it ,theres no wind on earth that will destroy a poured concrete structure so why build a building out of the exact thing that was blown away the last time ,generally experience makes you wiser ,dont they spot the concrete slab the house was on was still there? Dont they put two and two together ?

Apart from the woodern houses the rest was tongue in cheek but have your fun youve been good lately so let the nit picking commence enjoy

Newt said the last time wind was mentioned wood was cheap ,that suggests human life is .concrete is bad for the planet but great for stopping next doors house coming into yours and i humbly suggest more humans die through lack of weather rather than a abundance of it

The chap who told me that Debbie was a bit over hyped lives in Brisbane, on the Sandgate, Thorncliffe border on a street called Flinders Parade. He can see Thorncliffe pier from his living room window. One cannot get much closer to the sea. I'm sure if he is OK then so will Bobj be.

Hypothermia in the conditions you describe is self inflicted, brought about by wearing the wrong clothes and a lack of imagination.

One cannot do much when some black horrible thing comes over the horizon at you, a thing that sounds like a thousand demented freight trains when it's ten miles away and in less than ten minutes it's gonna be on top of you. I've seen ships handrails ripped of the deck by wind and water Ken. I know what it is to be in weather that'll kill you, given half a chance.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Of course a poured concrete structure would survive, but who want's to live in a concrete block with a steel door and no windows. What is "lack of weather".

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Lack of rain where rain would be usually

Whats wrong with living in a concrete house with roller shutters ,you can open them!

I could easily live in a windowless house ,you dont need windows tellies will do the same (with a camera feeding it) and they dont bleach the carpet and you dont need curtains

Why do you need windows ? Dont you have lights? With a PZT camera even being nosy doesnt need them .not sure why windows are needed in the 21st century
