He pleaded guilty.

Doesn't mean he did anything wrong or that the sentence wasn't wildly disproportionate.

Yes, the sentence does look harsh, but part of it is the suspended sentence from last time he did it and the his prior conviction will have been an aggravating factor. The courts do seem to treat offences against the justice system like contempt and PCOJ harshly in general - people sent to prison for trying to wriggle out of a speeding ticket, etc.

If you plead guilty and you are innocent then you are a fooking nut job. Just as well he didn't do it in Scotland, he would have got a longer holiday.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

You seem to be conflating breaking the law with doing something wrong.

You under estimate the power of a policemans word over yours ,sometimes its better to say your guilty when you have nothing other than your own version of events than be found guilty merely on the words of a copper .

Forget that old rubbish of the opposition having to prove guilt circumstantial evidence is enough to fool a magistrate and yes you do have to prove innocence its called an alibi ,without it its your word against the fuzz and 99 times out of 100 they are believed

Crown courts are a little more professional but smart lawyers can turn anything you say into damming you ,you really need to prove innocence or just admit guilt and get a more lenient sentence as it is cheaper and quicker for the courts .

Heres one concerning fines but it applies in jail time aswell

https://www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/explanatory-material/item/fines-and-financial-orders/approach-to-the-assessment-of-fines-2/8-reduction-for-a-guilty-plea/

His breif most probably said most wisely ,look mate these ****ers are going to hang you as you got up their noses best vote guilty and hope you get off a bit lighter

If an innocent person stands up and tells the judges the law (even if its correct) they aint going to be amused and they will crucify you

That's true. I don't think there's anything wrong with doing 90 at 4am on an empty motorway, but it's breaking the law. And if I get caught, I'll take it on the chin.

I'm not entirely convinced that he didn't get exactly the outcome he set out to get, to be honest.

All,

I haven't followed this thread (picked it up on page 4). However:

"""""You seem to be conflating breaking the law with doing something wrong."""""

and

"""""" I don't think there's anything wrong with doing 90 at 4am on an empty motorway,""""""""

What has happened to doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.” I guess it is true the world over, people are more honest when being watched.

Looks to me you are saying "the crime" is getting caught, otherwise no harm, no foul.

Phone - I'm saying that one may not always agree that the law is right, but if one chooses to do the "right" thing and gets caught, one can hardly complain about the consequences.

Define 'the right thing' phone.

Are you saying that all 'laws' are 'right', all the time?

The 'right thing', like humour, is subjective, and is dependent on the situation, the individuals concerned, as well as the time and place.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John
