Buying wooden fishing reel! Perhaps the picture is what you buy in reverse! Then its off down the mitchell path?! Possibly the nottingham reel is the first? Mass produced to a pattern reel but i dont think items that store line suddenly appeared in england first,no coke bottles i admit but theres sticks ! Pictographically it was china who made them first just as it is now lol ,not bad over a 1000 of years reel making it puts alcocks in the shade lol

As for rare since ebay appeared rarety was down to few ways to find things not that they were rare ,what was once seen in a blue moon is common now the world has the ability to show its wares ,common starbacks went from fairly common to so common they rarely get noticed but frogbacks still get good money

I don't think the Inuit did much fecking about with rods and reels. Folks with mouths to feed generally go for nets, harpoons of some kind or other and hand lines.

A reel isnt just something on a rod the reason i added coke bottle ,so a reel can be anything as all it does is store line ,in the eskimos case probably a lovely whale bone effort or something whittled out of a polar bears shoulder my point being wood is not the only non metal material you can use

They also ice fish as well so i guess the rods could be bone as well ,warmer on the hands than holding wet plaited line
