Are migrant powered treadmills classed as "renewables"?
Just dangle a passport in front of them when everybody puts the kettle on...

On a slightly more serious note, Germany actually has pretty much the highest electricity prices you'll find anywhere.

On a much more serious note why is the article about Germany and not about the UK? I guess we don't have the room, that seems to be the excuse for everything.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

I wonder if the utilities are state owned in germany theres not much incentive here if its down to several providers .

Theres also the green taxes imposed perhaps the germans pay more to bolster the system than us.

We got a letter last week thames water are going to increase our bill by £18 this year and £25 from next year to build a sewer 30 miles away ,they say its not really for that but to keep everyones sewer working but strangely wont fix ours that blocks up every few weeks and has for 15 years.

Not sure hydro would work in surrey and windmills an eyesore but i am sure solar could work theres enough fricking unused fields round here doing f all

Stupid fool even spotting Ken L's post i missed cods "cheap" bit ,it aint cheap compared to carbon based fuel not by a long shot ,clean perhaps so long as its not this bio fuel nonsense

It is good news but needs to be viewed in context. This was one day when conditions were perfect for renewable sources, demand was low and many coal fired stations were priced out of the market (some did generate). It would be interesting to know how close they were to the energy gap. Renewable energy will always be 'only' part of the solution because we are limited as to where we can build and can't control the wind, sun or rain. Tidal is the most reliable source but the technology isn't available for it to generate any real capacity.

Energy will always be a mix of renewable and conventional sources but 85% renewable on a day just shows what can be achieved.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

It does happen in the UK too Cory, again conditions were good for solar.

What is "real" capacity?

Sihwa Lake,South Korea 254MW

Rance Tidal Power Station, France 240MW

Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon, Wales 240MW

MeyGen Tidal Energy Project, Scotland 86MW

Is that not real enough? The problem with electricity is not so much the generating, it's storing it. In Scotland they use pumped hydro storage. That can't be used in most parts of England. You need big lakes and mountains for that.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
