It all depends on what you measure and how you weight the results. The WHO rankings have been going for years and we currently have the 18th best healthcare in the world according to their assessment methodologies.

If you ask the right people the right questions, you can get any result you like.

The NHS scored badly in one area - outcomes. Whether you survive or not.

Not a good category to score badly in.

I can't quite work out how France comes so low down the list. Most GPs you can get an appointment the same day, some you don't even need an appointment.

When my mum-in-law's neighbour needed a triple bypass he was in hospital 2 days after his initial referral to the cardiologist.

I have worked in the NHS as a Senior Nurse so I know what a patient should expect.

I have been a patient in the NHS and have had family who were patients in the NHS

I have been a patient in France.

My own personal experience, I can't speak for others, is that the level and quality of treatment that I have received in France far exceeds the level and quality of treatment that I received from the NHS. I hear the same thing from just about every Brit in France that I have talked to on the subject.

How the NHS compares to other countries I couldn't say, but I don't know of many European countries where you have to wait 3 or 4 weeks to see a Doctor.

You can wait weeks to see a particular doctor (19 days is the longest in my experience) but you can get an emergency appointment (5mins) on the day by phone but generally theres an appointment available if your not worried who you see in a couple of days.

When we first moved to this village you simply turned up at 8 am and took a ticket and saw a doctor but decent practices (it joined up with two others) have more patients so longer waits .

Its not uncommen you are late getting in the doctor i saw thursday had the patient in before me for half an hour ,i was out within ten minutes but she takes as long as it takes so i dont complain about waiting

I think i am lucky in my area no problems myself in any hospital and my head bailiff got an MRI scan within 3 days of his docs visit

Biggest problem I (and doubtless other working people) now have with the NHS is the recent introduction of telephone pre-screening before I can get an appointment.

The idea is that I ask for an appointment, a doctor rings me to discuss the problem and then offers me an appointment only if he/she feels they need to see me.

Problem is that I drive a desk, can't just get up on a whim and I'm not prepared to discuss my confidential medical issues in front of my colleagues and clients.

Such a system is fine for the elderly or the feckless but it's not fine for the people who are actually paying for the NHS.

Nothing like that here ! Perhaps you need a different doctor? Ours has a online booking system where you book without talking to anyone ,you just book turn up and be seen but its not for all you can be seen sooner by phone as appointments are cancelled on the day.

I for one wouldnt encourage a doctor to make decisions on a phone i think the doctor wasting time on a phone is better spent wasting time face to face ,triaging works best face to face and would certainly work in hospitals but not some surgery how can you predict what a sore back is by phone ,two paracetamol or a misplaced disk its down to how you describe it in those few seconds !
