reel case

Just bought a new fixed spool reel (new Mitchell 300), and need a case. It needs to take the reel and spare spool, be padded but not extortionate. Preferably squarish in shape with a good zip. I tried some time ago with a Preston monster but it was too stiff and had holes either end of the zip that let debris in. I await the opinions of the assembled masses !!

Why companies operate like this is beyond me a few lines of specs is hardly hard work ! Perhaps they dont need customers

If you need any more spare spools - PM me - I've a few.

Both for the 300 & the 410 Match (they're all the same spool & fully interchangeable - I have them from both)

Not sure how they've got the nerve to call that a Mitchell 300.

I've never used a padded case, you must be pretty rough with your gear to need one. I got a couple of soft leather cases from Mullarkeys a long way back, but most of my reels are in cloth money bags that I liberated from a defunct bank branch.

With a bit of alteration they also make great bait bags for hanging round your neck when roving around, I use them for either meat or maggots.

I have to own up, it is one of the new ones. I still use my old 300s reels, but I thought I would give the new one a try. I landed a 18 lb 8 oz common on it last week with no problems, despite it's looks :)

One of the reasons I could afford to fish in all sorts of exotic places was that I never spent money I didn't have to, and made sure I got my money's worth from what I did spend.

Wrap the reel in a clean piece pf tea-towel - it will protect it from grit and scratches just as well as a fancy reel case. Rinse in fresh water and dry the reel if it gets near salt water, always dry it off after a wet day's fishing. Use sewing machine oil or similar quality - before the reel starts squeaking !

I use clean maggot bags. They seem to be a Northern thing, because few had heard of them when I last mentioned them. Just a cloth bag with a neck strap.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I am Leeds originally - now Wakefield, & yes mate, the Southerners don't seem to get the "Maggot Bag" thing.

Best thing out when stood trotting all day with Maggot bag round ya' neck.

Also, we prefer the term "Hole" ('ole), rather than swim!!

I see we're not too far apart in years either - I'm 61 in Dec'. Born in Pepper Place, Hunslet - know it??
