Was in Aldi last night and in their freezer section, they have packs of five blast frozen Cornish sardines for £1.59.

They're not huge but they're big enough and just over 3 quid for a day's bait isn't bad.

Species caught in 2020: Barbel. European Eel. Bleak. Perch. Pike.

Species caught in 2019: Pike. Bream. Tench. Chub. Common Carp. European Eel. Barbel. Bleak. Dace.

Species caught in 2018: Perch. Bream. Rainbow Trout. Brown Trout. Chub. Roach. Carp. European Eel.

Species caught in 2017: Siamese carp. Striped catfish. Rohu. Mekong catfish. Amazon red tail catfish. Arapaima. Black Minnow Shark. Perch. Chub. Brown Trout. Pike. Bream. Roach. Rudd. Bleak. Common Carp.

Species caught in 2016: Siamese carp. Jullien's golden carp. Striped catfish. Mekong catfish. Amazon red tail catfish. Arapaima. Alligator gar. Rohu. Black Minnow Shark. Roach, Bream, Perch, Ballan Wrasse. Rudd. Common Carp. Pike. Zander. Chub. Bleak.

Bigger packs of fresh sardines are available from some branches of Morrisons and they're cheaper than the Aldi ones but blast frozen will give you better quality baits if yo want them frozen.

Nothing wrong with roach on a treble but a lot of places ban livebaits or even coarse deadbaits and quite a few people want to have frozen baits ready to go whenever they have time to fish.

As you can generally only get frozen bait from larger specialist tackle shops (and pay a premium for it), having usable baits that are sold for human consumption fills a gap.

I did one find a Chinese place that sold small frozen barbs but they closed down before the winter pike season.
