Spinning for estuarine sea trout?

Steve Walker

Recommended Posts

I have just been told that my offer on a house up north has been accepted, so hopefully before too long I will be on my way.

The house is on the River Wyre estuary. I mean on it. As in, open the garden gate and I'm by the river. The EA long term flood risk assessment is "very low risk of flooding" and the neighbour says she's lived there 30 years without any problems.

I don't know who owns the fishing rights outside my gate, but I am only 90m upstream of the freshwater limit. It's apparently a decent venue for flatties and eels, with the odd mullet and bass.

I know the river has a run of sea trout, so I am minded to upgrade my licence to a migratory fish licence and have a crack for them with lures.

Worth a try?

Hi Steve, just had a look at the fishing on the river, it looks a good mixed fishery. I don't know if you've seen this site, but it offers some info' on controlling clubs, and hints at some day ticket, and possible free stretches. Tigger might know more about it.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Might be a bit muddy but go for it. My Danish mate recommends very small metal slice type lures.

Don't forget that you can also target flounder on lures.

Flatties and bass too (though it looks like we may have a ban on recreational fishing for bass for most of the season...)

If I were back home fishing for sea trout I'd drown worms or use a bent nail as a spinner.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

They don't wibble-wobble as good as a bent one.
