Yes they did and up to the Victorian age they had lead lined ones ,I had a military one which was zinc lined (why two of them were on a council dump I will never know) .

There's a nice one found in London where very nice glass vessels were found lying beside it ,not sure why they were not inside it though.

Strangely a great number of romans were buried in roadside ditches ,perhaps it was cheaper than cemeteries of the time ?

Lead is impervious to X Rays (also discovered within the Victorian age)

Maybe then, some rich Victorian families had a preconceived idea that they could hide valuable heirlooms within - to be later recovered??

Bear in mind - even some of the most affluent in the day - weren't the sharpest knives in the drawer!!

OK - so you're asking "Why would a coffin be "X Rayed" - answer in the day was -"You Never Know".

I was born in the day when a dose of castor oil & orange juice when in labour was thought to be beneficial.

AH but....did you spot the glass vessels (very expensive then) were on the outside lol.

I always find it strange no-one ever asks where the rings or coffin handles go when you get your loved ones ashes back?

I think perhaps they never get near the furnace ,i presume the body is removed from that expensive box which is sold back to the undertaker and the rings sold ,in essense your paying for a lot but getting little in return but a few ounces of duet which even may not be related ,time we had an exposé in the death business lol

Dust not bloody duet silly machine!

Saw a program about an underground Victorian graveyard ,I wonder if those dusty coffins are unopened as they should be ,I bet those screws were undone long ago
