If it comes to facebook yes 42 million are very dumb and insist on hanging their dirty washing in public extremely dumb ,so dumb its lucky they dont need training in breathing or facebook wouldnt exist.

The same could be said for chemists if women didnt exist most of the shelves would be empty and the chemist broke!

Theres even people dumb enough to tell their 'friends' they are going on holiday then stand slack jawed when they come home to find theve been burgled ,pretty dumb people out there almost as dumb as those that have their lives revolve around their phone then wonder why bad things happen when its lost or stolen

42 million Facebook users dumb ? now I wonder what would a lot of those the 42 million users would say about you Chesters any ideas on how much business you can actually generate by social media plenty of crap on it but there is plenty of crap in the papers fake news on tv its everywhere not just social media and yes there is actually plenty of dumb and dumbers out there all right and a hell lot a of them dont actually use social media . Anyone dumb enough to think they are users of social media deserves everything they get. They aren't users, they are product - the users are the advertisers who pay for influence and access to personal data.

What's interesting is the one sided reporting when in fact that both sides were at it.

Remember the "Trump dossier"?

You get use of the service free of charge in return for them being able to show you adverts and monetise the data they collect about you. I'm happy with that arrangement, if anyone didn't realise that was the deal then they are naïve at best. I don't really see the difference between someone using analysis of that data to flog politicians or to flog consumer goods.

There's a world of difference between flogging a box of cereal, an item of clothing, or fishing tackle, and flogging a political party/politician/ideas, that can influence the future of nations, and their people. A difference, apart from someone is going to make money out of both.

There is from a public interest point of view. From a personal impact perspective, though, it makes no difference.

I believe a leader of a nation, and his actions, will impact us all more than a new jacket, or a packet of Corn Flakes ever could.

Of course - but the point is that the fact it is being done by analysing a huge data set which includes some information about what pages you liked on Facebook is neither here nor there.

I think it might go a bit deeper than just what you liked on facebook. The few times I've looked on my wife's account, the amount of personal stuff some people put on there is almost unbelievable. I asked a friend of my wifes if she would allow a perfect stranger to take pictures of her young daughter in the bath. She obviously said 'No way', then I asked why she puts them on a social media site, she said 'Oh that's different, it's just for my friends', not thinking that it could/would include their friends, and so on.

It's not just facebook though, I recently added a new e-mail address, told immediate family, but didn't use it. I recently went to buy some shoes and they didn't have the ones I wanted in my size, but were expecting some. I purposely left my new e-mail address so they could let me know when they got them in. When I looked at my mail, I had several posts from Vodaphone, PPI claims, and a few insurance companies, they could have only got info from the shoe shop.

We are all the subject of attempted manipulation, it's just the degree and severity of the end purpose that varies, and of course our own gullibility.

They were running some deep analytics on it, looking at all the data they could gather. But - setting aside their nefarious objectives - so what? What I am getting at is that we might not approve of the use they put the analysis to, but they were just doing on a larger and smarter scale what we consent to let everybody else do all the time. We haven't been violated by this intrusion any more than are every day.

It goes a bit beyond simple adverts though. They are using AI's to scan every word you type, your social connections and every clue you give about your values and opinions to construct sophisticated psychological and socioeconomic profiles of you and using that to sway your opinion and sell you goods.
