Evening Primrose Oil?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I've just watched an episode of "Embarrassing Bodies" on the W HD channel.

My wife, who underwent an operation for breast cancer 2 years ago is now experiencing pain/discomfort in that site.

The specialist on the TV prog' told a patient that the pain is caused by things like hormone imbalances & such like & that "Cancer does not hurt".

She then went on to recommend Evening Primrose Oil as a course of treatment to the patient - the dosage higher than that which is normally available over the counter.

We are intending to discuss this on my wife's next appointment (her discomfort being the reason for that)

I was wondering if anyone on here was willing to share any experience of "Evening Primrose Oil" for the treatment of Breast pain.

Having now seen the prog' to the end, the lady herself found a great improvement after a couple of months on it (1,000 mg's a day)

Thanks.

Martin.

I hope your Mrs is fine other than that ,unfortunately my mrs cannot take it or many other things because of her epilepsy and some meds she is on..

You have to be careful though with both prescribed and indeed over the counter meds placebos are strange effects some people even feel better knowing they are placebos .

I would do a bit more research incase it counters something else she takes

Thanks mate, yes - we have no intention of doing anything off our own back but will be putting it to the breast care people & surgeon at the appointment.

My Mr's is currently classed as In Remission & is otherwise OK.

Martin,

Aging will have an affect on your decision. It seems to have a homeopathic following it the US for treatment of "breast pain" during menopause.

In Britain, evening primrose oil used to be approved for treating eczema and breast pain. However, the Medicines Control Agency (MCA), the British equivalent of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), withdrew the licenses for evening primrose oil products marketed as prescription drug products for these uses. The licenses were withdrawn because the agency concluded that there is not enough evidence that they are effective. The manufacturer disagrees, but it hasn’t published studies yet to prove the effectiveness of evening primrose for these uses.

Best of luck

My sister had both breasts and her womb removed in her 30tis (how do you spell that) shes fit as a fiddle now .

She was confused over this 5 year thing she thought she had 5 years left until i pointed out once you got to five years after the opp without any recurrence your chances are back to whatever it is for everyone.

The thing is to catch it early the recent revelation people have "accidentally" not been invited for a scan is a scandal and someone should be sacked (many it cannot have been one person involved) its far more cost effective to remove a small lump than a big one the same goes for servical smears !

Best wishes for her recovery and a cure for her pain relief but watch out for co-codamol my mrs is addicted to them

I am not against 'herbal' remedies (i take garlic but no proof it does anything but cheap enough to hope) its the potential interractions with prescription meds you need to look out for ,grapefruit and statins etc but 'experts' tend to overstate rather than understate and we rarely see the data they make their statements on .

Alternative medicine is medicine that has not been proven to work or has been proven not to work, If it had been proven to work it would just be called medecin.

There's also the "works for some & not for others" factor, even with "Proven" prescribed medications.

Thanks for all your replies guys, as said before - we won't be doing anything till we've sought professional advice.

Womb is the correct spelling - thought chesters meant thirties (30tis)

Chesters1,

You spell it "UTERUS"
