Tree id anyone? Ken L, Vagabond?

Going by the statement "the only one i have seen"

I've only seen one walnut tree in my life. A friend in Newbury has one in his garden. I've only seen one almond tree. It was growing at the roadside in Corsica. Does that mean that I think walnut trees and almond trees are rare?

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Ken,

They (Ginko) are supposed to be a top oxygen provider too. Not confirmed by me. Just coffee shop talk.

I'd have my doubts on that score.

Release of oxygen is a product of photosynthesis - the production of oxygen and glucose from water and carbon dioxide using energy from the sun.

Plants also convert oxygen into carbon dioxide as a result of respiration but on the whole, provide an excess of oxygen.

Ginko aren't known for rapid growth or producing vast amounts of sweet fruit, so I don't see any reason to believe that these trees are producing more oxygen than any other.

Your "coffee shop talk" may be rooted in the Chinese notion that trees gather Chi.

They do in fact release negative ions that some folks choose to believe have beneficial effects on health and mood.

Rarity is a moot point ,here dingos are rare in oz not so

Perhaps you should get out more :)

More seriously, they are now much rarer than they used to be.. Folk would plant a walnut tree for the benefit of their great grandchildren. Alas, said ggchildren have long since sold the tree for veneer and it has never occurred to them to plant a replacement.

Pickled walnuts with cold roast venison is one of my favourite packed lunch options.

Theres also the case of ownership ,if your lucky enough to inherit your grans house with its tree then you may plant another but if your renting theres no point starting to grow one both you and the tree may be living somewhere else in six months !

Maybe I should move to France. Good quality timber is much cheaper over there. The one in Newbury is at least as big as this one.

I don't think my friend in Newbury will be in a hurry to get shot of her walnut tree.

All,

Are you referring to (English) walnut trees or to black walnut trees? Frankly, I can't say as I remember ever seeing an English Walnut tree unless it was on a jaunt to your side of the pond. Then I didn't recognize it as being unique.

Phone

I am a willing consumer of both. Ohh, for excitement, an almond is not a nut.

Juglans regia AKA Persian walnut, English walnut, Circassian walnut.

Neither walnuts nor almonds are true botanical nuts. They are both the seeds of drupes.
