Landing net sizes

When fishing a mixed fishery with smallish sliver fish and carp up to 20lb, but mosy around the 3-8 lb mark what is the best landing net size. a 55 x 45 cm seems too shallow an some spoon nets too large. Would I be beltter off using a 55 cms ring with a deeper net. I see some matchmen using nets that are far too small and barely hold a 5lb carp. My preference is for a rubberised quick drying net

The two best times to go fishing are when it's raining and when it's not

This one looks deep enough mate??

Think you'll struggle to find a one fits all situations though - maybe 2 nets with 2 handles??

20" dia'.

Back in my match fishing days, if I had a match on a river that was mainly dace, with a chance of a few decent barbel or chub, then I would use a large deep net, and tie a cord with a slip knot around the net to make it shallower. It landed any medium sized fish, but by pulling the cord, the net went to its full depth to accommodate any larger fish I might hook. It saved having to much gear spread out on restricted bank space.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

As readers of "Angling Vagabond" will know, my first decent carp, hooked at night, was too big for my net, and had to be played until daylight, by when it was docile enough to be netted head-first, like an egg in an egg-cup. In 1949 the fish (8lb) was regarded as a monster

Last week Norma and I repeated the feat We stopped at a motorhome site in Lincolnshire that offered fishing on site. One has to use mats and nets provided by the site. The nets are small, but we managed a 6-4 and a 7-7 carp landed by the method described above, as well as many other species A total "matchweight" of about 36 lb - "shooting fish in a barrel" comes to mind.

"shooting fish in a barrel", a shame its not allowed on many of these waters Dave.

Maybe 'in a puddle' would be a better phrase to use.

Decided that most silvers can be swung in by hand, so reverted to my 27 inch spoon net
