I like "If". I like the Maya Angelou poem too. It occurs to me, though, that "Still I Rise" is about being the black descendant of slaves in America. Angelou had a horrific early life. She was born in 1928 in Missouri. She lived through the civil rights years. She suffered a great deal of personal hardship. I'm slightly amused by the idea of relatively privileged students growing up in a relatively liberal country feeling that it speaks for them. "If" is more universal, though it may reasonably be pointed out that it is addressed directly to only half of humanity.

I think it was chosen simply because it would cause maximum gammon-fury, to be a provocation, rather than because they had thought about what would be most appropriate.

You can't say that Steve, :o . It's much less than half, don't forget the LGBTQIA.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I think the LGB would generally split between the two, the T would also be in or out depending on what they are now rather than what they were born as. The QIA - yeah, they will have to go write their own sodding poem.

Personally I think the Qatar Investment Autority are occupied at the moments with problems in banking, doubt they have time to write a poem.

Theres always time for the idle to write stuff

"Swearing by God who upraised the sky,

Swearing by God who spread the light,

Qatar will always be free,

Elevated by the spirits of the loyal,

Follow the path of the ancestors,

And the prophets guidance.

In my heart, Qatar is an epic of dignity and glory,

Qatar is the land of the early men,

Who protect us at time of distress,

Doves they can be at times of peace,

Warriors they are at times of sacrifice."

I'd rather a Syrian hamster than a Russian one.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
