Many years ago I had an insight into the world of greyhound racing. Unbelievably corrupt. I have no reason to believe that horse racing is any better.

Why would I wager money on something I have no control over?

A game of poker on the other hand.....

To be fair the average punter has it all to do a lot of horses in the lower grades are often just out for run out but a little bit of inside knowledge goes a long long way but as anything in life nothing is a certaintys a lot can wrong in a race in high value races most horse are trying big prize money sees to that .

All,

As a farm boy delivering to the horse track I learned to "follow the hay bill". Always seemed to work for me.

Martin,

Yup some with - some without blackstrap. Go to the barn - regardless of what was delivered the bill will read "hay". A spooky to the point of paranoia - horse trainers are.

Our R I master (sanctimonious old humbug) used to preach and screech about the evils of gambling, which made me inclined to take up bookmaking as a career.

By contrast our maths master, after our final School Cert exams (yes I pre-date GCEs) spent the last few maths lessons of our school careers taking us through the mathematics of making a book. That nearly convinced me to become a bookie - and stopped me from ever becoming a punter !

So will cattle. I'll bet a pound to a penny a thoroughbred will not turn it's nose up to a bit of good Timothy hay.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Timothy is saddly lacking in hay fields today ,most mass produced stuff is single variety unfortunately some even completely weed free .

The stuff the farmer i worked for sold hay but horse owners remarked their horses liked it better than competitors stuff and that was down to it containg timothy and other grass varieties and a lot of weed species.

I spent many hours pulling ragwort and digging dock so he could charge a quid or more extra lol

Theres hay and meadow hay and i guess meadow hay is declining ,its strange round here in the hundreds of acres of unkempt fields money isnt made selling hay its horse country as you can get!
