European predators - Black Bass, Perch, Zander

The Flying Tench

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking of treating myself to an overseas fishing break. Sportsman has got me interested in Brittany for roach and bream, and maybe I could catch a zander. I'm also wondering about Holland. I've got an Anglers World brochure, whose emphasis mainly seems to be bagging bream but I wondered if it might be possible to catch one of their big perch, too.

But then I came across this place on the Ebro

Phew! Another world! A few interesting facts

Perch grow to 11 pounds!

They are funny to catch!

One of the best baits is dead sardine!

Most people fish for zander cos they're the easiest to catch!

I'm aware they also get 5lb roach in the Ebro, though I don't know about this part.

All very amazing to me, but I get the impression it's a very big river, and personally I wonder if something smaller might not be more fun, easier to fish stick float, but still 'it makes yer think!'

On the subject of black bass, how different is fishing for them from fishing for perch? I realise that much black bass fishing is with lures, but is it like perch that you can equally fish with lobworms? I mention it as I have a bit of back trouble and can't stand for too long.

Perch are a member of the Bass family, so can't see any reason why Black Bass wouldn't also take a worm.

A few strands of Red wool also tied to the hook might not go amiss & worm twitched now & again IMO.

All,

Black bass are accidental by-catch lob worm fishing. That is, unless you are using artificial worms in a technique called "wormin". Not all that great a fish if you ask me. Their appeal in the US is that they are rather easy to catch and ubiquitous i every state.

Tench,

Are you remotely considering N. America? Otherwise I'll tap out of this thread.

No, I'm not thinking of North America really, Phone. But thanks for the thought.

No need to go abroad for zander - we have caught plenty from the Severn whenever we go that way,

Norma and I have caught 501 different species worldwide - some species have interested us enough to want to catch more - such as tench, perch, bonefish, mullet, marlin, barramundi and wild trout. Other species we have caught, but not been too enthused by them, and moved on to another species Black bass, carp, cod, bream and mackerel belong to this latter group It has nothing to do with sheer fighting ability, rather it is an intangible matter of how challenging it is to catch a good one.

Just how irrational this feeling is can be judged by the fact I put roach in the first category and rudd in the second. I once had a roach-rudd hybrid of 3-12 and didn't know if I should be pleased or not (Gozzer pointed out it was 1-14 rudd and 1-14 roach, so I still had not caught a 2lb roach)

Plenty of places and species to choose from, "The world is your oyster" - or as Arthur Daley put it ".....your lobster" Choose a venue (or a species) and I might be able to offer more specific advice
