Went up to Bowness on Solway on Tuesday, and called in at the 'chapel' which is classed as the western end of Hadrians wall, you call in there and stamp a card, to say that you've made it. (No I didn't walk the length of the wall). We were taking a few pictures when a middle aged couple arrived, we got talking and they'd just finished walking the 84miles of the wall from east to west. I could tell he was an Aussie, he said from just North of Sydney, but moved from Nottingham to Aus in the early 70s when he was 8 years old. As we spoke, I noticed what looked like a Leeds United scarf poking out of his rucksack. I asked about it, and he said yes, he follows them because he was born in Leeds, and moved to Notts when he was about 4. I asked where in Leeds, and he said he wasn't too sure, but thought it was Armley.

So I'd travelled 90 odd miles from Leeds, and met a man who was born about a mile from where I was born, and had moved half way around the world, travelled back, and just arrived at the end of Hadrians wall at the same time as me.

We had a good old chinwag, about United, Leeds of old and present day, a very pleasant chance meeting.

John, I was born in the Peppers - Pepper Place, Hunslet,

 

Cobbled streets with the most amazing Bonfire Nights on the planet.

 

Chumping - collecting wood for same, started around back end of September & kept the wood in cellars till near in case of Raiders!

 

Mams did pie & peas & Jacket potatoes etc for all the street.

 

Windows near the fire almost melting!! - maybe not quite, but childhood memories!!

I wouldnt recognise anyone from the past my brain doesnt work that way.

If someone toots going down the road i wave but dont have a clue who they are ,names get forgotten in minutes

The only thing in common with the original post is we walked the wall in 1974 and the people we met doing it could be counted on one hand

We moved about so often as a kid i never got to know anyone enough to give a crap what or who they were lol
