There's every likelihood he was. He & us just had our legs smacked for it by UAE. They always had every intention of releasing him in due course once their point was made.

He was hardly just Backpacking!!

The UAE have been very pro USA/UK for some time. More recently the current leader has been getting more friendly with Russia and China because they were not happy with the West's support for Arab uprisings, particularly in Egypt. I suspect that Mathew Hedges was involved in something and this was just the UAE's way of saying"we are on to you and this is what we could do about it if we wanted to, so wind your neck in"

He walks away without embarrassing revelations and point made.

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.
