Ken Davison South Wales:

I seem to remember the term spring butt relating to my rod, it was hollow glassfibre, can't remember the length. It had a Union Jack on it and I believe the reel seat was a screw one, it was a light yellowy brown in colour.

Sounds exactly like my Martin James rod.

Cork handle, Chrome-on-brass ferrule, Rubber Butt Knob, Chrome rings, Screw Reel fitting looked very small because it was around the solid glass butt.

I have a hardy longbow my dad gave me tucked away, old hat maybe but it can still outcast most on the beach. 150 with bait using the layback is one hell of a cast, simple gear still going strong.

les and the longbow are sea angling legends.

my father in law has a 14ft model, its like a big rubber band we had a go on it a few years ago mega distance for little effort.

just shows they really knew what they were doing when they made them

ken,

mines a mustard colour with a screw fitting and cork handles could be the same rod.

pete,

was moncrieff an instructor?

Not as such, I don't think. He was sponsored by the rod maker, Intrepid and the local shops to demonstrate his layback style casting with the reverse taper rod that he had designed.

As I remember mine it had a hand grip on the bottom of the butt and one just below the reel seat. I think I was about 20 at the time so that is nearly 42yrs ago.

On searching the web recently for rods I did come across one that used a double taper, can't remember the make or model.

After thought!!

Since owning the moncrieff I must have had 15 or so beach rods and his is the only one I can remember the name of, it was either very bad or very good and I favour the latter.

with todays modern materials, maybe they could make a light version and create a more leisurely way of casting, could be interesting at least, youve heard of the saying, throwing the baby out with the bath water.

jim,

just had another look at the rod and a martin james i think it is.

who`s he then?

Used to see a lot of rods with that brand name on them. Someone else will come up with some history, I expect!
