over the last few weeks of being a new member of this great forum, with some great advice given by many.

i have heard about many different baits used. rather than put on endless posts regarding different baits, i t

thought i would make a short list of them, and hopefully all of you who have used them can give advice on each of them through your use and experience. and which ones to use, whether raw or cooked. and what fish they are maybe best for.

mussels

prawns

dog biscuit

buzzers (whatever that is)

sardines

mackerel

small squid

pastes (what is this)

any other fished based products would also be a help, as in my job, i have many fish products to hand and in large quantities. mussels, prawns, mackerel, sardines. and would love to know how to use them and for what fish.

mussels :- tench/carp/roach/bream/barbel and have caught gudgeon and perch on them

prawns :- nearly same as above

dog biscuit :- carp off the top banded or hair rigged

buzzers (whatever that is) i think you are talking about fly fishing here

sardines :-pike/zander/perch

mackerel:- as above

small squid :- mainly for sea fishing but i think catfish take them

pastes :- nearly any fish carp/bream/roach/barbel/rudd

bread punch :-roach/carp/bream/rudd

and a tip :- with punch take a slice of bread and pop it under your bum IE sit on it to flatten it works a treat

hope that helps

Sea deadbaits rarely catch perch but are excellent for many other species, including those not considered predatory. My most successful by far has been whitebait, on which I've caught a lot of different species. In fact carp have been a flaming nuisance on whitebait when I've been after, ahem, better fish. <_<

had not though about that one, i have that to hand as well. as for the not catching perch, that i dont mind to much, i would like to get away from them from time to time. but dont get me wrong i still love to catch them, but sometimes they seem to get in the way

s_mac - a 'paste' bait is pretty much any glop you concoct that is stiff enough to mold onto a hook or a hair with a bead in place to help hold the glop.

If you'd like to try one from across the pond that is cheap to make, easy to make, lasts just this side of forever if dried some and then stored in the fridge and appeals to any fish with a sweet tooth,

- 2 cups of flour (I like the whole wheat sort but white flour will work too)

- 1/4 cup brown sugar

- add enough molasses to slightly moisten it so you can work it (start with 1/2 cup and add a tiny bit more if needed)

Mix really well (adding a tiny bit of water if you absolutely have to and then flatten into a round cake not more than 1/2 inch thick.

Bring a skillet of water to a boil and lay the cake into the boiling water. Cook until it is firm (10 minutes or more) then remove the cake and let it dry overnight.

Cut into sections and take a section along with you. It should be firm enough to put a piece on a hook without any problems and it lasts well in the water.

The ideal consistancy is about like that of a plug of chewing tobacco but I'm not sure if you folks have any of that for comparison.

I once chewed a 'plug' of tobacco and threw up. I've smoked 20 cigarettes a day for the last 25 years and thought I could take pretty much anything. Got to talked into it by one of those boys from the deep south ...

uk equivalent of 'plug of tobacco consistency' is a stiff paste.

They most certainly did. We were staying in a remote fishing / hunting lodge in Alaska with a strict non smoking / non tobacco chewing policy within confines of the lodge (fachists everywhere). Before long, we all ended up sitting outside in the cold, drinking beer, smoking cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and throwing up.
