Hi All,

Just incase anyone has missed this little gem, A Oban based charter skipper is claiming to have caught a 238lb Common skate from the Sound of Mull, along with a 150lb male on the same day.

For anyone that didn't know the biggest male ever tagged was estimated at 144lb the biggest weighed was 135lb.

Now for to catch one record fish in a day is pretty amazing, but to get two that's unbelievable.

Now I'm not one to argue rolleyes.gif but having seen the photo of the 238lber I know what I think

Haven't seen the report, but assume from your post it wasn't Ronnie. If the skipper is who I think it is, would have liked to have been a fly on the wall when Ronnie was told !

Looking forward to having my annual go at skate next month.

Hiya,

I've spoke to Ronnie a few times regarding it as we are of the same oppinion.. it's total bull sh*t. To be fair it is a big skate but I'm pretty certain it would only make 210lb at the most. In the picture the fish is carrying a tag so it will be interesting to see what the dimentions are for it and if it was already tagged.

Davy,
having seen you in action, if you say it looks more like 210lb then it was probably 205 or 215lb

IMHO, Common Skate should be removed from ALL specimen/record books (as in Ireland) including Sea Angling magazine lists. Until then when the fish are measured the tape should be included in the photograph, that is how it is done over here with all fish pictures that are sent to magazines.

You seem to get them all in Scotland, I seem to remember a few years ago some plonker reconed he had a 86lb Tope or was it 68lb? I think that was in Oban as well. rolleyes.gif

How was your 10 days in paradise? biggrin.gif

That's still closer than 238

Yup I would tend to agree with that.

Hi Davy,
in the August edition of Sea Angler there is a little write up about our trip as well as 2 pics of guests of yours, Jim Croal with a 167lb and William Rennie 127lb.
It seems that I have won a badge in the Shimano Mission accomplished comp for the 169lb er.
I have posted on the Coarse section drawing peoples attention to your Dolphine picture.

Brilliant pic.
