I sea fish every now and again but due to other commitments its been about 2 years since I last fished in the sea.

I have been going through my tackle recently and have noticed that my reels are starting to look like they have been sat at the bottom of the ocean for the 2 years they haven't been used.

Does anyone have any ideas on the best way to clean these reels up or have I left them to long and they are now beyond repair.

At last, a red letter day! Everything that we had planned came off for once! target species achieved and much much more

Me and Bill decided we'd target the smoothhounds down at Blackpool
Armed with a load of cracklers/crinklies (cheers wayne) and peelers me and MrBay had gathered (cheers paul) we launched at 8.45am (cheers Steve Winter!)

I won't mention the fact that 'Up Yours' arrived at the slip a good 20 minutes after us...yet still managed to launch before us!! I won't mention it 'cos Gary Young's built like a Silverback and twice as ugly......just like his crew for the day!

Anyway, that was the only downer of the day as we steamed off towards our chosen destination..........a much closely guarded secret destination, passed down from father to (first born only) sons for generations........otherwise known as (Shhhhh !! Whisper it!! )
.....Blackpool

We arrived one and a half hours before low and dropped the pin in and cast out more in hope than expectation within seconds of the bait hitting the bottom the rod tip started dancing which resulted in a small tope.........

Very next cast resulted in our target species.........

Next cast, as soon as the bait hit the water.............

Then Bill...........

It was unbelievable.......as soon as the baits hit the water the fish were on, making screaming runs with the reels disengaged on ratchet.
Mainly smoothhounds with the occasional tope for good measure. It was HECTIC.......30 fish in 2 hours. We didn't have time to set up the second rods for the first half hour, and pictures were out of the question most of the time....

We still managed a few piccies when the fish allowed us........

And the odd video.....

Remarkably the fish continued to come thick and fast even over slack water.............

Some really good specimens were coming aboard, fish to 15lb.....

After low water had come and gone and the flood started, the fishing slowed down a bit for some reason ??? instead of a fish a cast, we were only managing a fish every other cast....but they were better quality smoothies....

The Starry smoothhounds put up a terrific fight, really hard fighting and they stay down deep for ages......

I burnt the clutch out on one of my reels so, for a bit of fun, I decided to set up my bass spinning rod for the hounds........

Bloody good fun, a fish of around 12lb........

We were knackered by now......we worked it out we'd had around 500lb of fish in the session!!

Superb!!

Steaming back to base, we noticed a commotion amongst some gulls near King Scar, so we went over for a nosey and discovered a decomposing porpoise by the looks of it...........

When we got back to Morecambe, the other boats had had good days too.....Steve's lad Ben had a personal best bass of 6lb!

A brilliant day, let's hope the match next week is as good

Fixed Spool Beach Reel

Just a wondering if anyones got any suggestions on a fair priced fixed spool for beach work? I fish the beaches of Norfolk and Suffolk which are all pretty clean, I'll probably load it with 18lb line and team it up with my newly aquired Paul Kerry whisker rod.

I'm not fussy about the make and would probably want to spend no more than 40 or 50 pounds.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Cheers

Dan T

Mull of Galloway report 07 May 2008

Hi team,Snatcher reporting in from Sandhead Internet Cafe (its actually the church hall and they have 4 pcs available on a Tues and a Thurs 11.00 till 13.00. - Unless there is a funeral service on !!!)

Got taken to a new shore mark on the west side of the Mull yesterday. My guide was George,a guy who has just moved his van onto the Clash site.

Well according to the forcast the wind was supposed to be easterly 10mph. As usual they were well off the mark and it was quite gusty at this mark. I am not too keen on rock climbing/scrambling and this one was just on my limit

Set up with a green Snatcher sandeel and started getting knocks straight away. My first fish in was a pollack about 1lb. Second fish in was another pollack about the 3 lb mark.

George in the meanwhile was float fishing mackerel strip and he was doing nowt.We only had about an hour on the mark as George had to run an errand into Stranraer.
After getting 6 pollack to three pound on my lure decided to try float fished limpet for the wrasse. Three casts and three more pollack, all about the 2lb mark.

George in the meanwhile got 2 pollack on the float and had a really big pollack about the 5/6 lb mark follow in the mackerel strip and swirl away on the surface at the very last moment.

All in all had a really good first pollack session of the season. No photos as for one I had forgotten my camara and two there is no facility here for attaching them.

Met up with "Toonfireman" for the first time in the beer garden of the Tigh Na Mara on Tues afternoon which was nice. He invited me to fish in his boat one day so will try and sort it for next week as he is out most days.

Snatcher signing off, will post up more reports when I can. No Internet access on the Clash site at the mo for my laptopbut hoping to get that sorted.

THE REPORT Weybourne North Norfolk

Weybourne 3rd May 2008

Early Saturday morning 1.30am the alarms were rousing members of the Desford SAS.
Today they would be ascending the pebble beach, at Weybourne, in the North of Norfolk.

Leaving their respected abodes the plan was to meet up on the beach, where the battle to prove who was to be Top Blanker. Baits were to be Lug; this was ordered from a reliable source, local to the area we were to fish, squid + any other mysterious fish attractants, I’m sure would be used.

Travelling under the cover of darkness the 2½-hour trip was about over when a crescent Moon appeared from behind dissipating clouds, also revealing a reddish turquoise sky.

The feeling, this was going to be a good day, by the seaside.

We were first to arrive and for the uninitiated to the Weybourne Beach Car Park there is a section that is fenced off and runs parallel with the area, this is the area you can park for free, yes no £6 fees.

Climbing over the shingle we were greeted to a flat calm sea, with the sun about to break over the horizon. As we all know we anglers never travel light, so a couple of treks to the car were needed.

Setting up our base camp we were soon to be joined by the rest of the motley Desford SAS crew.

The cracc started early with banter and laughter filling the air. Great expectations were flying all over, were we to be truly Blankers on this day.

Soon rods were bending then a salvo end rigs were seen heading seawards through the air. The first set of rods were rested on their tripods, second rods were put together which soon followed the first.

The kettles were now boiling, and then a well-earned cuppa was now to be consumed.

Eyes scanning the rod tips to see who would be first in, then the shout fish on, I was the first to land, with my first cast, a Pouting. It was soon unhooked then placed back into the sea; this would be a catch n release day, unless a fish was well over undersize or not a protected species.

I caught a couple of other Pouting before the shout came from my left, my brother Dave had caught a dab and whiting, the first of many double headers through out the day.

I was using a 9ft uptiding rod + Penn 535, for close shore fishing, this was loaded with 15lb main line and 80lb leader, terminating with a 1/0 three hook flapper. The hooks were baited with Lug, sometimes tipped with a slither of squid. The other was a 15.5 Blue Team Beachcaster Rod + Abu Mag Elite, loaded the same as the smaller rod. The end rig I would start with a 3/0 – 2/0 Pennel rig with a 3oz wired weight. This was cast 100yds + to hopefully catch that bigger fish. The tease were a number of Lugworm, their tails made it look well enticing.

During the morning several fish were caught, Whiting & Dabs, I somehow was stuck with Pouting.
My luck was changing, after loading the big rod with half of squid, it suddenly came to life.
Taking the strain, I knew straight away this was a half decent fish. On retrieving the rod was being direct left n right, was this a smoothound, then close in it broke the surface, A Dogfish.

The lads were all there shouting, “Who Who Let the Dogs Out.

Weighing 3½lbs it was soon back into the sea, hopefully for some other angler to catch another day.
That was to be the only fish that I caught with the big rod, at distance.
All other fish I caught were at close in on the likkle rod.

My tally for the day, Pouting (6) Whiting (1) Eel (1) Pollack (1) Dogfish (1)

Desford SAS caught 6 Species in all on the day.

It was a good day for the angler, all caught, but not a Blanker in the group, how disappointing.
Desford SAS failed; none of us were to be honoured with the title of Blanker.
We can only wish the next time.

WATCH THIS SPACE

Mullet Return

Today I have seen fish feeding on my breadbag for the first time this year. there have been reports of fish around the area for the last few weeks but these are the first seen in the dock (Southampton) this year. One of the fish has a distinctivley marked head, round one eye from nose to gill cover is whiteish, this fish was resident in the dock last year.
Has anybody else noticed in their areas that the same fish can return year on year?
In this dock fish have shown up within 4 days of the 1st of May for the last 5 years according to my records, this year being no exception. How do they know the date???
Yet another mystery about these annoyingly frustrating fish we nutters all love so much.
The rods go in the car this weekend and I'll hope to catch my first one soon.
Best wishes to all fellow Mullet nutters, lets hear your reports of sightings/catches
