Disappearing Lugworms?

I collect Lugworm (both Blow and Black) on beaches in Southern Ireland. There is a PLENTIFUL supply in late spring, summer, autumn. However I notice that the supply almost disappears in Winter, especially this year, and there is no sign of a resurgence yet. I want to make the following points:

There are virtually no squiggles or craters on the surface (indicating the presence of lugworm).

If I dig a trench about a foot deep and work at that level I do eventually come across some lugworm, but they are extremely scarce (one in 20 shovels at most).

Weather has been extremely cold with frost most nights for the last 2 months. Could this be a factor?

I read that sometimes the worms go deeper in cold weather. If I dig down two feet, might I be more successful?

However, if the worms are present (even at the deeper depth) why are there no squiggles (heaps of excrement) or craters?

Can anyone clarify the above.

Evenin' all,

I'm off on a Bristol Channel trip this week, first time in these murky waters. Target species are Rays, Spurdog and Conger with the possibility of Cod and the usual suspects.

I have made up conger traces (2' of 250lb mono, ball bearing swivels and 8/0 and 10/0 hooks) and cod pennel rigs on 70lb mono. I was going to make up some ray rigs with 70lb mono and Mustad tope and ray 6/0 hooks. Thinking about it would I be better off just using some of my tope traces for the spurdogs? A bit of overkill perhaps but it'll save making up more traces!

My tope rigs are Mustad 6/0 tope and ray hooks attached to 6' ish of 250lb mono and a ball bearing swivel.

We will be moving about targeting species.

Failing that any advice on a general purpose trace without using wire?

This year I am renting an apartment in Freshwater Boatyard, St Mawes, and taking my own rowboat down, in June. I should be able to row a mile or so from the boatyard, but what features on the seabed am I looking for? Do I fish the fast tidal channells, or muddy flats? Any local knowledge would be much appreciated, Can I expect mackerel, dogfish, dabs or what?

Thanks in anticipation.

Trevor Jones
