An evening wrasse session

Last night had promised to be a calm sunny one so I had decided on a wrasse session at one of my old marks. After parking up I had a 45 minute "yomp" to contend with and also a couple of electric fences to carefully negociate, not to mention a field with two bulls in it to avoid !!!

I arrived at my mark two hours before hw and after I got my breath back set up a light spinning rod with a sliding float and lugworm as bait. I set the rubber stop at about 15 feet. The water dropped away at my feet so casting was not necessary,I simply lowered the float in. The float had just been in the water about a minute when away it zoomed and I struck into my first wrasse of the session, not a big fish but nicely coloured.

I had decided to make this a rock hopping session and to move on about every ten minutes so I picked up my small backpack and clambered about 25 yds along to the next likely looking spot. This spot produced nothing so after a couple of casts I moved on again. The wrasse I was catching were not monsters but a couple were a decent size and they were all hard fighting fish.

What was impressive was the vivid colouration on them and no two looked alike.

Now that morning the sunrise over Luce Bay had been a good one.

I was to be treated to an awesome sunset as well. I took this shot just as a trawler was sailing past

My last wrasse of the session was my best one and gave a real good account of itself. I did concider staying on a bit longer but the thought of climbing over those electric fences in poor light and making a mistake and walking into the bull field made my mind up for me.

In total I caught about a dozen fish and all were carefully returned. Do you think my tactic of keeping on the move worked?? Who is to say,I may have caught the same number if I had stayed put at my original spot. What I can say was that it had been a pleasant way to spend a summers evening.

When I got back to the van Dorothy said that I had missed all the excitement. The Portpatrick lifeboat had been called out to tow a yacht to Drummore harbour. Here is a shot she took of it as it got towed past the Clash.

This is about as exciting as things get in Drummore which suits the pair of us fine.

Snatcher signing off from Mariners Cafe,Drummore

Alans first wrasse bash

About a month ago we had a new couple buy a van on the Clashwhannon site. After a bit craic with Alan in the Clash it unfolded that he fancied trying his hand at "this fishing lark".
A few of us on the site sorted him out with gear and took him to a few spots. After he had caught his first few pollack and mackies he was well "hooked".

Yesterday it was down to me to take him on his first "wrasse bash". I had dug a few lug on a Luce Bay beach and knocked off a few limpet for our session. A couple of more mates joined us for this session so I drove us over to our mark. I had forgotten what a yomp it was to the mark and the climb down verged into the "uncomfortable zone" for me - soft Geordie so and so !

I set up Alan on a sliding float set at about 15' with lug on and I had a similar set up. My other two marras decided to have a go at spinning for pollack. To be fair I had taken mackerel and pollack at this mark a few days earlier so I fancied their chances.

God must have been smiling down on us as Alan got the first bite and duly reeled in his first small wrasse.

The hook came out easily and he was well chuffed to see it swim away safely - nice one Alan. It was my turn next with a nicely coloured wrasse.

A quick photo and back it went. I was next in again with a better wrasse this time,on light gear they do give a good account of themselves.

I was a bit concerned when I put it back as it went "belly up" for about 5/6 seconds before it flipped over and sped away back to the bottom.

My other two mates had a few small pollack on the lures but that was all.

Alan and myself managed to miss a few good bites and also had the hooks pull out during the fight on a couple of fish,oh well it happens to us all.

The main thing was mission had been accomplished and Alan had caught a wrasse. The day was a scorcher and after only about two hours at the mark we all developed "cold beer in the fridge syndrome" !!! Tell you what after that tricky climb back up the cliff then the long yomp back to the car that first cold beer did not touch the sides.

Snatcher signing off from Mariners Cafe,Drummore.

A ralaxing day . . . bass fishing?

Yep, thats what I was looking for, a 'Lazy day afloat'. Put the anchor out and watch the fish bit . . . yeh Mentioned in the week to member how the Outer Ridge has been known to throw up the od decen bass, loked at the forcast . . . why not. Got a few peelers, some monster rag and a freezer full of squid.

The outer ridge is only a half-hour steam from the marina, almost flat calm, loverly, then I spied in the mist a small trawler. O'well I'm here now, give it try. To cut a story short, all I did was feed the crabs for an hour.

Back in to the river, wasted 90 minuts of the new tide, as it took some time to steam. Tried verious marks, nothing, slowly working my way to an area I treat as a 'banker mark'. Even here, nothing . . . OK 'sidways thinking', where might they be, the deep water, nah, a third of the tide has gon, it goes dead then. But with ragworm and not a fish, not even a sprat . . .

This is suposed to be a relaxing day, on feet all the time, brain in gear permanatly, and drifting which is an exciting way to fish but tiring.

The next hour and a half, saw 8 bass boated, 2 + 40cm, 3 + 36cm and a couple of sprats . . . thats seven . . . yep I had one worm left, there was a hole, in the deepest part 40ft+.

I had never drifted the hole . . . so, nothing to loose, last worm, set the drift, the worm was at lest 10" long so half a worm!!! tight git A 40ft + hole with 1oz of lead takes a long time to bottom out. The half worm was intercepted on the way down, missed the fish, slack line and all that. OK, added the other half worm, all wiggly, and again the long drop to the bottom, by this time I was at the back edge of the hole and running onto some deep rough ground . . .

You know that saying, "I can feel it in my water", well I could . . . Bang!!! no messing the toothpick of a rod bent double. This was a different fight, no dashing about, just power, stay deep, take line type power. Finaly the grey form came to the surface, the fish netted, only lightly hooked, a heavier more powerfull rod would have pulled that hold free. 50cm, about 3'ish+ pounds? A satisfying end to a great day afloat.

Ready for the net . . .

Safly aboard . . .

Thats a lot of water to find a few bass in . . .

It true these fish are not large by the standards of the long distance off shore marks in this aea, but I find it balances nicly in my mind against fuel and time needed, puerly a personal choice.

SW

My first Sea Trout!

Well ive been trying for about 2 months to land a sea trout and i even had a post about it, after watching 2 jump higher than my head as im wading out and losing them as they land back in the water, losing countless hours of sleep and resources i had ALMOST given up! ALMOST!

Up until 6 hours ago my tactics were Spin Spin Spin. I was getting fish but not landing them! a few days ago i bought some size 2 trout hooks incase i had a change of heart. Surely enough i decide to go sunbathing at my local beach and "Take my rod" along with 3 sand eels i caught a week ago.

The rig - Simple rig really, 3 way swivel with a 3 Oz bomber from the bottom eye, from the centre eye i simply used treble the distance i had used for the bomber and attached my newly purchased hook and on the hook? The head half of a sand eel.

i sat down and i had some nibbles, a small plaice. i cast back in with the same bait, and i had barely sat down to sunbath, SEA TROUT!

I think it was tired from hunting all morning or so because it barely fought my until i brought it out of the sand flats and over the rocks, Then it started to do what all sea trout do best! JUMP! i had a feeling the hook was gunna hold out so i played it hard to to get it to jump so i could admire it. and that i did

The next task was to get it in the net, wow. it was such a shame my Series 1 skeletor was in for repairs and i had to use a 9ft Ron Thompson Hardcore II, i would had the fish straight in on the Berkley but the 9Ft of rod really made it a hard task from the jetty i was standing on, however after 3 runs and 1 jump from the net i landed it! and WHAT A FEELING!! weeks and weeks and weeks of waiting finally over!!!

"Irony" I was supposed to be sunbathing!

If anyone reading this has not yet caught a sea trout id recommend it, not just for their jumping but for the beauty as a fish once its in. and the taste! well lets not go down that road i could be here all day as if i havent already so without further a due, Some photo's............

This will only let my upload 1 picture, shame!! i have more......

A young lads first bass!

Hi all,

spent a week in pwllheli last week and despite lots of effort, not a bass to be had on the lure. A Few were coming out to worm but even those were small. Leon would love it here as the mullet are plentiful and BIG but not too easy to catch (I didn't try).......sounds just the type of challenge Leon relishes!

Anyway, back in Norfolk this week after a brief stop over in Brum. Had a busy day today but got in just around high tide and the wind had gone, the sea was like a looking glass and the receding tide was about right in the evening......it all seems just toooo right and had to be fished. I grabbed young matt and asked him if he wanted to go fishing....."who me" he almost guiltily replied! His mum looked at me and said yeah take him, so off we went with rods lashed to our bikes. A few minutes later we'd ridden to the dunes and huffed and puffed as we pushed our steeds up and over them. The sea looked perfect and the hundreds of squawking gulls told me i'd called it right today.

We neared a small groin which feeds into the estuary and I saw this shoal of bass all coming diving out of the water and turned to tell matt, but he was running past me shouting FISH! FISH! FISH! (oh the joys of being young eh? lol) He'd got his rod in before me and before a few minutes had past we'd got 3 or 4 schoolies each hooked, landed and let go again.

The gulls were having a frenzy and of course were a great indicator to where the fish were. This spot has a super sand bar about 100 yds out which then curves its way around the estuary. We decided to wade our way out and follow the outgoing tide as it took the fish with it. By the time the estuary was empty, the light was rapidly fading and we'd taken between 50 and 60 fish. All bar two which had taken the hooks into their gill rakers were duly put back. One of these was matts first fish and can be seen in the pic. Its now a pair of fillets in the fridge and will be served up for him tomorrow with a plate of salad and some well buttered new potatos............some kids just don't know how lucky they are!!!

http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/post-a6364-mattbass.jpg.html

Wildcard catch report 21-6-09

We had a run off with the new skipper (Stevie Baul) yesterday and decided on a 5.am start from Hartlepool marina. It was the first time he had been out in the swiftcat but like all good skippers he was soon in the swing. The fishing was patchy though. We ran over 8 wrecks with only odd fish here and there so tried the ground off Boulby which also only yielded the odd cod or two, and never saw a mackeral all day. The best two I could manage were these pair - the biggest just over 10lb with 5 smaller ones. Still that's fishing.

Alan
