Hi been thinking of buying a angling kayak for a while. Have a canadian canoe whichis great for rivers and lochs but no good for sea fishing. As I have children thought a double would be the best option. Open to suggestions as to which would be the best one to go for.

Cheers

John

Something Smelt Right. 11th May 2008.

Following a hard day yesterday and a lovely day with the family today I decided to finish the weekend on a night session after the mullet on Lake Lothing again. I'd got some white bread in and had bought a 'new' spade at the car boot sale this morning - two quid for a proper spade made out of thick, heavy metal with a full wooden handle, older than me - none of this garden centre rubbish for me - and used it to good effect by digging a bunch of harbour rag in a few minutes 100 yards from my launch point. I'd brought my match rods, one with feeder and one with a 4bb float both loaded with 4lb line. I was getting serious!

Pushing out the Prowler 15 (my evening boat) I paddled half a mile to a bay near an old wreck and dropped anchor. Mullet (presumably) were topping here and there but in no great numbers.

I baited up with rag on both rods, filled the feeder with dampened crumb and cast out. Within seconds of the float landing it ducked under. Nice feeling that...I brought it in and had the first schoolie of the night. I wasn't certain that it was a Bass at first because of the dark spots on the flank but going by the spines and mouth I think it must have been.

I cast again and a minute or so later another came in. Back went another small ragworm and the float dipped again...this was going to be a fun couple of hours...I was surprised by what came out though...the photograph doesn't do it justice as the flank had a lovely pinkish sheen but I am almost certain I had caught my first Smelt! Normally the only thing smelt is the yak after those bloody dogs have ambushed me before launch ;D

Then in came the feeder rod with yet another schoolie:

I couldn't watch two rods with ragworm effectively with bites coming this fast so I changed over to bread on the feeder and a small crab on the float (found it when digging the worms). No takes on either and after a while I returned to rag on the float, missing some bites but landing most.

It was a lovely, calm, warm evening with a gentle breeze and bags of sport to be had. Nothing large came aboard but hearing that familiar sound of large mullet leaping, tailfin flapping before they crash back into the water brought back fond memories of childhood holidays at my grandparents and it was just a real pleasure to be afloat. I ended up with ten Bass and a Smelt landed and called it a night...bliss.

what a day my mate and i had yesterday, out for only a few hours on the flow of the tide.launched from restbay.s.wales at 4pm paddled to a mark probably 300yds offshore, trawled a lure on the way out and had 2 bass, well lost mine(this was the beginning of a bad day for me)we got to our mark set up anchor not 20 ft away from each other,we both used the same bait,i caught nothing in fact didnt even have a bite.where as my mate had 6 smooth hounds to 12lb a nice bass 6lb,a small cod would you believe, and countless dogfish.i even managed to snap my rod on the last retrieve plus our anchors got snagged and we had to cut them free wow what a strong tidal race, bit scary trying to pull the anchor free, and both nearly tipped over.top it all on the way in i took a tumble in the surf and lost my spool of anchor rope, and had to gather half my gear which was strewn across the beach.all in all a grand day out ..

Hi all,

I know this has probably been asked before but........

I want the best kayak for sea fishing (east Devon) that £500-£600 can buy. I need something stable, quick, lots of easy stowage space and easy to transport.

I've trawled the internet and come up with the Ocean Prowler 13 or the Wilderness System Tarpon 135 as possible options. What do you think?

And if its not to much trouble.................what's the best floatation jacket for paddling around in for less than £100?

Thanks for any input - I'm really excited about joining this sport!

Bassing on the Alde. 4th May 2008.

A new one on me – I’d never fished the River Alde at Aldeburgh, Suffolk before and I’d never fished specifically for Bass before. I’d also not had a Bass from the yak and not fished with Billy before so quite a lot of firsts for me on this session.

Billythebass had come over a few days before to pick up the reels I was selling and we hatched a cunning plan to have a crack at the bass that had just started to appear after the winter. A few schoolies had been reported and so we decided to have a bit of sport.

I was due to meet Billy at 9am, 33 miles and an hour away and accordingly set my alarm for 7:30, naturally waking up rather excitedly at 6:30. My wife wasn’t excited however so I had a coffee and got my gear together and loaded up the yak.

The previous afternoon my daughters and I had taken some drop nets down to the pier and in an hour had managed to get 22 4-inch prawns to hopefully use as livebait. This was cracking fun and the first time I’d been this year as it’s been a bit rough and is still a bit early for them to be here in numbers. Kept overnight in the fridge half a dozen were still alive when I left which was not a good percentage having had some last for days previously. Still, bait is bait and off I went.

Arriving by the Martello Tower I dumped the Trident and kit off and went and parked. Billy was already there and getting set up and I got my first look at a Hobie. He has the revolution and I had a good old nose about. I was very impressed – apart from the excellent quality there really seems to have been a lot of thought put into the design of this and some things, such as mesh side pockets and round compartmentalised hatch bucket were something that I would like to have on mine. The ease of deployment of the rudder also really impressed me although controlling it with my hands did not appeal – but then you need to as your feet are taken up with the pedals fitted to the drive. I can see why people who have them swear by them.

I launched first and sat about pretty stationary as Billy got in and set off, peddling away as I took a pic or two:

I must have been in an eddy or something as this threw me into thinking there was very little current and so I stuck a couple of lures out and paddled out. I drifted at an alarming rate as did my lures and I caught a moored yacht. I then disturbed the owners breakfast and had to bugger about to unhook from the mooring line. Still, he was fine about things and I had a notion of the current speed here and waited until I was into a clearer area before sticking the lines out again.

We paddled for a while – or rather I did as Billy sat back and peddled – it was a first for him too as he’d not fished from his yak yet.

Reaching our mark I tied off to a buoy while Billy tried to get the anchor to hold but the current was ripping through and so he tied off to another buoy further away than he’d intended. A pity as we had to shout to each other rather than just talk normally – and this was a social outing after all.

I was carrying 5 rods with me, the most I’ve ever taken as I wasn’t sure what it’d be like. My two coarse fishing match rods which are very fine and used for tiddler-bashing in the river, loaded with 4lb mainline, two 12lb class for trolling and a 7ft spinning rod with my 17 year old baitcaster. The current put paid to the original plan of float-fishing prawns on the light rods and so I chucked out the 12lb rods, now-dead prawn on one and ragworm on the other. I was using muppets on one rig and attractor blades/beads on the other, size 2/0 hooks and a running ledger rig. Which is all fine of course but Billy was not so preoccupied with such irrelevancies and was in:

And he was then in again.

And again.

So they were here then – but small. Then I got a few taps that I missed before finally hooking my first yak-caught Bass. Another tiddler but species number 14 for the year to date.

A quick photo and then back it went.

Billy was still catching, I was missing (frequent) bites, and soon he had a sizeable one. Then I had a third – a beautiful, shiny silver Personal Best! Excellent stuff. I had a couple more tiddlers in the boat, a good few bites (and some good bites too) and dropped a really heavy fish too which was a great pity (and too damned common for me). All too soon it was time to head back up river – I didn’t have long to fish as we had plans for the evening. Of course I had to try for one more fish and after a few minutes the rod tip went and I struck into what felt like a better fish…

A codling! I normally paddle a couple of miles out for these and here came one from a river. Still, it was only a pound or so and I released it to grow fatter.

We paddled back up river. The current had slackened a fair bit but was still against us and it took 2 or 3 times as long to head back to the launch point. I had a cranked shaft to play with and although I found it perfectly fine to paddle with I still got some soreness in my left wrist so it’s starting to point to poor paddle technique or perhaps an adjustment in feather being required. The WAFI’s (as I heard them called) were about and so we had to pay heed to them.

As we came back up towards the marina there was a strong smell of diesel and it seemed that some one had managed to spill a fair bit of it that had gone in the water. It was visible for quite a distance as it flattened the water out quite markedly. Anyway, back to the launch point I decided to have another ten minutes as my ‘last cast’ tradition and with the tide just about at the top I wasn’t expecting much sport. And nor did I get it – a few small knocks but no fish. I paddled in and loaded up having landed 5 Bass and a Codling (all on ragworm) and having had a very pleasant few hours indeed.

Enough to save me a quid or two for a few Tope/Conger trips.Decided to head back to the harbour.

It was a bit choppy re-entering the harbour but nothing serious.

After I'd de-rigged and loaded the yak on the van ready for home I took this pic-----looks like I made the right decision, the swell had picked up

Headed for home to get the 30 or so mackerel frozen for bait.By evening I was getting restless

decided to take my last chance of fishing for this weekend with an 11pm launch from Mudeford

The new sandbank can be a problem as it causes waves to break about 50 yds out of the entrance-took 3 over the bow straight on no problems and was on my way to the fishing grounds.

Made good progress and was soon in the area that I intended to fish, unusually saw no shore fishermen in the area,.Found a pot bouy in about 25ft and made fast.

Had fresh mackerel that I'd caught earlier in the day along with the usual rag and squid.

Was feeling fairly tired so decided to fish only two rods. One a Pennel with a couple of squid and the other with a paternoster set up with a 1/0 on top baited with rag or squid and on the bottom hook (a 3/0)a hefty fillet of fresh mackie.

The usual pout and doggies were caught-yawn

Then took a hefty knock on the euroboat with the paternoster rig.

What was it?

Didn't feel like a Conger---------had visions of all sorts of things it might have been during the fight where it continually peeled the 15lb mono from the little ABU.

Towards the end of the fight the fish started to show the characteristics of a Conger and sure enough

Conger no.1 for the year!!

the bugger did a death roll on the surface and it took a while to disentangle it from the trace but to see it swim away gracefully was the highlight of a brilliant weekend on the water

time to start planning next weekends adventure

Had a fantastic day and christened my yak with fish, my mate and I went out this yesterday afternoon just past the wreck I caught a nice size mackerel and a small bass which went back, Stuart had a mackerel and a Pollack, he also lost his anchor, snapped his rod, broke his reel and tipped over in his yak, and he still says he had a ball, even helped rescue a sunken boat and truck from the high tide. We had a great day can't wait for our next trip.

I am considering buying my first fishing kayak when I noticed a couple of yakers fishing off Ogmore by Sea yesterday Sat 3 May. If you gentlemen read these posts I would be glad to contact you to discuss my options and for some general advice. Any help from yakkers in the Bridgend Porthcawl area would be appreciated.
Out East 27th April 2008

Well all week I’ve been looking forward to today – original forecast back then was sun, 6 inch swell, 4 mph onshore wind. I can assure you that it was anything but! According to Magic seaweed today was finalised as being 2-2.5ft swell, 15 dropping to 10mph, South moving to West South West cross/offshore and overcast. Well, it was overcast a lot of the time but we saw some sun. The swell was mostly 2-2.5 ft when we took shelter after retreating from the usual mark a couple of miles out – with some a bit bigger and the wind didn’t seem to drop all day (although it may have). It was a funny day, and not ideal – but it was great anyhow! Especially as I hadn’t fished since France nearly a month ago.

The day started well – I woke up a couple of hours before we planned to meet up and after a coffee headed down to the car boot sale to get some more weights – a guy flogs breakaways for 50p and I needed more for one of my guests. Then back home and start getting the gear together. Then David rang and I directed him in, in the meantime knackering my bike pump trying to resurrect a flat on one of the C-Tugs so we had a coffee instead. David is one of my new colleagues and a keen fisherman so of course I invited him out and he turned up with a demo Drifter and a bag of boilies. More of which later…

Scott turned up next, another local who came out with me once before - he had the bait too, the best lug I’ve seen, ever, and a bunch of good peeler crabs He’s heading off on Friday for a substantial period and so we had to get out come what may - and get out we did with the Prowler 15 on David’s roofbars and me walking the Trident down to the beach on the C-Tug.

Highpoint of the pre-launch was David asking us if we hair-rigged baits Not having a clue about boilies and hair rigs but knowing they were carp things I looked blank.

Down on the beach we set up, got our kit on, divvied up bait and posed nicely for the chap who dropped by to see us off, being in the area. I was slightly concerned passing my camera to one who needed a haircut but it turned out okay.

We launched. It looked really pleasant and pretty flat really. Perfect in fact. It didn’t last though, past the surfline (if you could call it surf) we had the 2ft swells and they were fine. Past the overfalls on the sandbanks we carried on heading out to the Stanford Buoy where we usually find some codling. I started up the finder and by the time I had the right screen the other two were out of earshot due to the wind direction. Five minutes later I regretted this as the swell was picking up out here and there was no way I was happy about getting them to anchor in it – David not having anchored before and Scott only once. Frankly I didn’t want to anchor in it either as the leads would be bouncing and it never feels comfortable anyway – especially being wind over tide for the next few hours.

So, having had a nice gentle calorie burn we turned and came pretty much most of the way back. It was a bit more tricky though as we had the current coming crossways and some chop as well. It didn’t take long though and we found some calmer water of around 2-3ft in 23ft of water about quarter of a mile off the wooden pier. A pity really as we’d knocked a reasonably good mark on the head for one that I wasn’t so confident in. I kind of felt guilty making them paddle all that way to turn back but fair do’s – they felt the same! Then out came the first windsurfer I’d seen in years:

So, the other two anchored off (easily) I dropped mine down and started tackling / baiting up. Then came a shout – David was in – his first yak fish and first sea fish in the UK! Jammy sod – I only had one rod in by this time. It was a baby so it went back in.

I dropped my second rod down and hauled up the first with my first ever sea double-shot – a pout on the lug and a whiting on the squid. Two more species for the year.

Off they came and smiled for the camera:

Pout:

Whiting:

More of each followed and then Scott was in – a pout.

I carried on pulling out the odd pout and whiting and then Scott was into a better fish – Codling. It fell to peeler. I had some on one of my rods (just bought myself some new ones – Masterline John Wilson prime 7ft 2-piece boat rods. 2x12lb and 2x20lb. They’re the same trim as my other rods. TART!).

Then out came the kite-boarders…

…followed by some tosser in a gin palace that was heading straight for David (and presumably us afterwards). Now, I wouldn’t be in trouble if I didn’t bring him back but he had two of my rods and so I raised my paddle as he put his back together to do the same (no paddle keeper). Thankfully Captain Twatt looked up from pouring another and stopped, turned tail and fled. I dunno, shouldn’t be allowed on the sea.

Meanwhile Scott continued to haul in codling. We weren’t that far from each other but I didn’t attract a single one. It must be down to superior skill, that’s all I can think of. Bastard. Then I got a rattle and wound in my PB Whiting! Lovely stuff. Not long after David saw the porpoise surface a metre or two from my starboard side but guess who was reeling in to port?

It was nice out there, a bit lumpy but really pleasant to be out. I tried to have a sleep at slack water but the sun was in my eyes so I couldn’t. Then David shouted across the question of all newbies – “How do you have a **** from one of these things?” I don’t know how he managed it in the end but he did, without falling off.

The wind had moved around, the tide was supposedly running the other way, the swell had flattened a bit but was more choppy, the lines were slackening constantly and the fish had disappeared. After last drops we up-anchored and headed in…

…riding the small surf into the beach with no casualties.

Of course we had to unload and play in the surf then. David didn’t want to miss the opportunity and I figured it’d be fun to play in the surf with the Drifter which has a nice looking keel and is shorter than I’m used to. It also had thigh straps which I’d often wandered about but never got around to getting. So after he had a couple of goes I let him take the Trident out.

I surfed in a couple of times and then caught a lovely wave. I rode it nicely for 50 metres or so and then the nose went down to the rear of the front hatch and I was dumped. Luckily the water is not quite as cold as it as been (although I still wouldn’t go in it if I wasn’t yakking!) and apart from getting some in through the cag/pants I got back in and played some more. I then watched as David saw what I meant about the Trident wanting to go sideways in surf as he calmly fell off One last go, both of us catching the same wave in and then it was time to pack up and head back to mine. Scott had sat this out and was lovely and dry. Typical eh? Dry, and with the best fish too.

Final tally was 4 pout and 7 whiting for me, 3 good cod for Scott (and a few whiting/pout) and another 3 fish for David. Most went back apart from Scott’s biggies, my big whiting and 3 smaller ones that were hooked deeply – they’re fishcakes tomorrow.

Top day, cobwebs blown away, a PB, 2 more species for the year and a good day out with good company – who can ask for more?
