Hi there, i'm a new member for 2012. It would be good to get in touch with any kayak fishermen who go out in the lyme regis, seaton, Bere, areas who wouldn't mind a keen novice tagging along. Ive got a tarpon 120 and some fishing kit. I did a few trips last year and had lots of mackeral as well as some pollack. I can't wait to get out again but on your own its a bit boring, so if any members are up for meeting up the it would nice to hear from you, cheers, Nick.

A New Kayak is Born

The New Pinnacle “Elite” has hit the market by storm.

I have been fortunate enough to watch this fishing kayak’s development and finally the birth of( in my opinion) the best fishing kayak to hit the market. There is more exciting news, the kayak is now being manufactured by one of South Africa’s leading kayak manufacturers Kayak Centre. My first look at the finished product got me jumping up and down with excitement, the finishes on this kayak are superb!

After placing my order, I was able to take the kayak out run it through a few tests...

A look at the Changes

1. The first major change on the kayak is the length. The older boat was 4.3m and the new Pinnacle “Elite” is 4.85m – you know what this means “Speed”. The old Kayak was amongst the fastest but now it has been taken to a whole new level.
2. The Hull – there are 2 changes to the hull which has also increased the ultimate speed of the boat. The V on the hull has been sharpened and reshaped to hit the water at exactly the correct angle regardless of the weight on board. There is no pushing of water rather a cutting and deflecting. The other change is the Rudder protector and Rudder they are way less bulky in diameter and size lessening the drag in the water.

3. The Back hatches have been reshaped with moulded lips that stop rushing water from getting into the hatches

4. The tail finishes in a point as opposed to the square cut.

5. The Seat – This is one of the best redesigns as the new seat shape is super comfortable and well moulded for added comfor.

6. Hatch and lid have also been changed – The hatch lid has a way tighter fit stopping water from entering in. The hatch is still big allowing space to fit even bigger rods .
7. The front section of the kayak has also changed – it has way less volume on the width which has reduced the overall weight of the kayak. There is still a rocker but it is way sharper and positioned at the front of the Kayak which helps it retain its brilliant wave riding ability which Pinnacle is well known for.

8. The weight of the Elite is +-27kgs as opposed to the old model which was +-30kgs this is largely due to the overall volume of the kayak decreasing.

Taking it to the water

As I hit the water and my Bum hit the seat I could already feel a difference! Playing around in the waves proved that the new Pinnacle has retained its brilliant wave riding ability. I thought that due to the added length it might have some difficulty but it came out tops. The kayak still goes over the waves as opposed to through the wave which has a 2 fold benefit, firstly you retain your momentum approaching the next wave and secondly you stay dry which is great for winter fishing!

I must say the Elite is fast! You can feel the ease in your paddle stroke, it doesn’t take much to get going. I jumped in at Blue Lagoon and thought that I would try my skill against the K1’s. The amazing thing was I could Keep up with them while they were all paddling together – the only time I fell behind was when they went into a sprint.
Video
So what’s the verdict?

The questions that I always ask when looking at a kayak are

1. How strong is it (there is nothing worse than spending money getting your kayak fixed after every second outing)

2. How fast is it ( getting to a spot 1st can sometimes mean you catching the fish. Speed also helps in strong currents and windy situations)

3. Stability (I have seen people tip over when gaffing fish and even while fighting fish)

4. Surf Handling (it’s better to be dry than wet – it also helps in protecting your gear, a rolling kayak breaks and also messes up tackle)

The New Pinnacle Elite has in my mind met all of the above in its design which makes it a must have. It totally blew me away and I am already a big fan! Do yourself a favour and go test drive the new Pinnacle Elite!

Contact

+27 (0) 84 582 5322 (Cliff)

+27 (0) 72 305 4340 (Claire)

info@pinnacleski.co.za[img][/img]
First Fishing Kayak!

Well after months of deliberation, hesitation, reading articles, blogs, try outs and general good old fashioned in decision i have finally made the plunge!
I am picking my first kayak up on the 20th August and have opted for the prowler elite 4.1.

i have some small amount of past kayak experience but not a lot. So my first few goes will be on my next holiday which happens to be at Rockley park at the shallow end of Poole harbor. Perfect i thought for building general paddle skills, maneuvers and generally jumping in off the yak and getting back on.

i may attempt a little fishing nearer the end of the week with some basic kit just to get a feel.

Just open to suggestions really and general comments about my choice of yak and the area i am visiting.

thanks

practice

Hi all,
Another newbie here. I've been reading all your safety advice and find it invaluable to me, my brother and a mate who have just bought our first yaks. We agreed on Monday that we were going to buy them and they turned up this morning. They are Winner kayaks and although they are chinese imports they seem pretty strong to me. I'd like some feedback on them if anyone has any. They look like the perception freedom. They are ruddered and are 12.5 feet long. So we plan to take them to sea and do a bit of fishing. Luckily we have a river at the bottom of our garden so we thought we'd try them tonight. I've never been on a yak in my life and after tonight's little venture, realise we are going to need alot more practice before heading through any surf. We paddled five miles tonight and we love them so we're going to keep going up the river (doing a bit of lure fishing) for the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, I'm bloody tired and my arse aches lol. I think tomorrow we're going to chuck ourselves off them and practice re entry a few times to see how easy it is. We have wet suits, life jackets, vhf, fish finders, flares etc so think we're geared up ok. I think the first time we take them out on the sea will just be for a bit of a paddle around without the gear. To be honest i'm a bit aprehensive. I have a lot of respect for the sea having come from a trawling family and shrimped and draw netted at times throughout my life so if you have any advice for me it would be very welcome
Thanks, G.

Picture of my new kayak below.

Fishfinder

Bit of simple advice please? Without breaking the bank, I'm looking for some kind of fish-finder type device, suitable as much as anything for identifying depths and structure, possibly within in-built GPS, though I can do that as an exterior option. Maximun depth I'm ever likely to be over is 40 feet or so, and it must be usable from an inflatable running with an electric trolling motor.
Thanks

Recommend an anchor?

Hmm ... not exactly a kayak user, but someone on here may be able to point me in the right direction?
I need a suitable anchor whilst using an inflatable dinghy, either on very slow parts of rivers, or on lakes. Typically I would expect maximum depth to be no more than 30 feet. Needs to be effective (!) and not too heavy ... and inflatable-friendly
Thanks
