Trout and carp.

As mentioned in another post, I was trout fishing today in Kent and returned to a water I have not fished for some years, but that still enjoys a good reputation.
I was stunned at the amount of carp in the main water.
Being the time of year, they were cavorting in the rushes, sky rocketing in open water and chasing around the lake showing all the time.
The fishing was poor, due mainly to the heat, but I also wondered how much this explosion of carp contributed as well.
The water is definitely a lot murkier than I remember.

The Fishery apparently has not stocked the carp, but these were fish up to low doubles, which don't grow that size overnight.

It seems that this is another trout fishery that has become spoiled by the introduction/ presence of carp.
I can think of one other in Kent and one in East Sussex.

Starting fly fishing

Hi,

I went down a local pond today and while I was walking around all I wanted to do was to get back on the river bank so I've decided to have a look at possibly starting fly fishing. I have access to quite a lot of the river dove below Burton and which contains trout plus the normal coarse fish. How feasible would it be to buy the equipment and go down the river bank after reading some articles about casting, presentation and setting up and having a good chance of catching after a few attempts?

Also I was looking at the following website and they seem to have a lot of good offers on fly rods and other stuff (I've used them before for coarse equipment and they are good) can anyone recomend either a combo outfit or a selection of equipment to point me in the right direction.

http://www.mullarkeys.co.uk/fishing/Fishin...fishing-combos/
http://www.mullarkeys.co.uk/fishing/Fishin...y-fishing-rods/
http://www.mullarkeys.co.uk/fishing/Game-Fishing-Tackle/
http://www.mullarkeys.co.uk/fishing/Fishin...-fishing-reels/

Thanks for any help.

Neil

Impossible brownies

Hopefully somebody can help me

From mid-April to mid-June I fly fish a beautiful little river which is actually on a coarse fishing club book, but they allow you to fly fish for the trout from 1 April. I don't want to name it because I have it all to myself It's a windy, fast and often turbulent little river running over gravel, mostly 2-3' deep with deeper holes and pools, some riffles, lots of undergrowth and overhanging trees. There are plenty of trout up to about 2lb, but anything over 1lb is 'big'.

Later in the year when there are hatches of Alder, Sedge and Mayfly the little brownies are a bit of a doddle - you wander upstream very slowly watching for rises, and cover each one. I usually catch at least a couple of trout in this situation. They also get so preoccupied watching the surface that you can get very close to them, if you're quiet.

However, this time of year when it's cold, weedless and nothing's moving, I always blank. I'll be the first to admit that I'm hardly a brilliant fly angler, and there must be a few things I'm doing wrong. I went yesterday evening and tried fishing down and across with a little brown wet (March Brown?) and then a little green wet, and then tried upstream nymphing with a small weighted PTN, but this wasn't heavy enough to get down through the fast water so I changed to a goldhead hares ear. I did have one sharp pull to this, but I didn't know if it was a fish or the bottom.

I use an 8' rod with a #4 floating line. I also have a 6'6" #2 outfit which I use when I can because it's so much fun.

So, how would you approach this? What kind of flies would you use, and what technique? I would really love to crack this and be able to catch the trout when they're not rising.

All trout are returned safely by the way.

Thanks for any pointers

Hiya, Well, I have a Greys GRX 10 foot 6/7 weight, which got the tip broken off recently, it was "repaired". Unfortunately that killed the action, I had a look on their website, to find that their is a lifetime guarantee with it, so I called them up just a few mins ago.
I spoke with a chap called Alan Young, who was Excellent,. he told me the GRX was discontinued around 5 years ago, and there were no spare tips in stock.., but not to worry. If I send them the joint section off each piece, and a cheque for £50, they will send me a new GRXi, in a Cordura tube, by return of post.

Its great to deal with a company that has a customer service like this...sooperb.

Cant wait for the new rod to arrive now...
