just download the new version ("run from" or if you want to keep a copy "save to disc") and reinstall ,if its very clever it may realise the original install failed and reinstall itself using the original files.
if you used windows update it will be classed as "unsuccessful" and will reinstall

perhaps a "system restore" will be enough to get round it but save any docs or stuff since the last system restore save

my xp is set up as "classic veiw" so may differ from yours anyway system restore hides in (classic) "start"..."programs"...."system tools"..."system restore" before using it remember to save any docs or other important stuff that may disapear (since the last "save" was made) anyway clicking on system restore asks you to restore your system to an earlier time ,it will depend on when a "save " was made to how close to today the computer will restore to ,remember any progs installed since that "save" will disapear from sight (which is the reason your using it re med player) on restarting your old version of med player should be there allowing you to upgrade it once more ,but remember its not 100% reliable (its widows after all ) so i take no responcibility for you using it

if its cured another problem as well its (the problem) probably a program or set of drivers that have been installed since the date you now have reverted to
if your completly happy with the way your machine is running now then go back to the system restore bit now and save today as a restore point
if you update or install anything and it runs to your satisfaction then go back and set the restore date to the day your happy with ,if you get a problem with another program (or driver/update) then you will know what caused it.

Doesn't XP now restore on a daily basis? Sure mine does.
I think that the sys restore is one of the best things to have happened to MS powered computers.
