thinking of getting the mach3 xt to float fish for roach, rudd & tench. looking at all the available options for it. i want the double handle but now notice it comes in either front drag or rear drag. my experience with rear drag hasnt been good (line give isnt as smooth as my okumas front drag)

does anyone know how good the rear drag is, i would prefer the front drag reels to be honest but if anyone knows how the mach3's front and rear compare. also size of reel. im thinking of size 30 but that doesnt have the double handle but i can live with that.

whats your thoughts guys ?

My thoughts are buy a Spro Red Arc if you want a good front drag fixed spool.
Having said that I have only heard good reports about the Mach 3 and you get plenty of spare spools. Never fished with one though.

Go on, get a spro, you know you want to

You can get them even cheaper from Ebay germany

tempting, very tempting but maybe next time. the mach3's 3 spare spools, 2 shallow 1 deep is what is attracting me toward it, plus ive only heard good things too. had a shot of the mach3 rod too and i was impressed with that so might later on down the line pair the reel with the rod.

Andy macfarlane has the earlier version of the mach reels and its as sweet as a nut.

Andy,
If you can, have a look at the Drennan Series 7 float reel. Around the same price as the Shakespeare, is lighter, runs as smooth ( I've had both and sold on the Shakey ) and comes with three spools. Even nicer is the Drennan FD3000 with alloy spools ( 3 ) which is smoother still and has a real robust ( now there's a currently overused buzz word ! ) feel about it.

For Rudd, Roach and other smaller species I use a 1000 sized shimano exage rear drag.
I prefer the smaller sized reel due to the weight of it as silver fish work requires the rod to be held at all times.
My heavier float rod has a 3000 sized shimano superaero for fishing for bigger species as I tend to use a rest as bites can take alot longer.
Both have very good rear drags.

Andy, I'd go for the front drag every day of the week. I'm going to add aother Mach to my reels at some point, to give me plenty of scope with spools and just general feel and balance.

You'll probably be able to order a double handle. Mine has a double handle and I'd be pretty surprised if the handles aren't interchangeable between models.
