Ethical wildlife gifts from the People’s Trust for Endangered Species

PTES NEWS RELEASE

Since 1977 the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) has been helping to ensure a future for many endangered species throughout the world.  Many British mammals have suffered dramatic declines and in response PTES places a special focus on supporting activities that endeavor to preserve our native mammals.

This year in order to maintain funding for this vital work, mainly gained through public generosity, PTES is offering a new ethical gift this Christmas:

otter_curled_up_976932842.jpgAdopt an Otter for £20: It was only a few decades ago that otters were considered an extremely vulnerable species and the otter population was suffering a steep decline. Since this period however their numbers have been slowly increasing.  Population strongholds are found in Ireland, Wales, the North West coast, Scotland and the West Country and are spreading eastwards across the country.  Although this increase in the number of otters is promising, their future is far from stable. The otter population faces a number of continuing threats including the loss of habitat, such as plant cover and freshwater pools , as well as injuries caused from fishing equipment.

We would all like to see the population re-established and so PTES has been helping to fund research into otter ecology on the Ceredigion coast of Wales.  The work includes studying their behaviour and identifying the watercourses and habitat available for breeding and foraging.  The availability of prey is also a key point in the study.  In Peru PTES are also helping to fund an otter project which involves evaluating the competition for prey species between fisheries and the marine otter.

By buying a wildlife gift this Christmas you can help to protect our native wildlife. Our gifts are unique, fun to give and, let’s face it, they’ll make more of a difference than yet another pair of socks!

Other ethical gifts from PTES include: help a hedgehog; house a dormouse; protect a red squirrel and plant a tree. For more information or to buy an ethical wildlife gift please call 020 7498 4533 or email christine@ptes.org or visit www.ptes.org
