General

With water temperatures this week holding in the 9 deg bracket it really is between seasons and therefore baits. Paste has worked some, pellet doing very well incredibly even the 10mm banded, maggot doing very well and worm, sweet corn also meat still catching reasonably well, chopped worm mixed with crushed casters and some hemp works well as a feed in very cold months.. Some good success has resulted in using seasonal berries with Carp as well as silvers taking them very well on the hook as long as some of the juices are escaping.

Although you should not be overfeeding just small amounts little and often this changes if you are on the shoals when the water is black in front of you with fish, then extra feed is required to keep them in your swim. This is because the fish are still at times during the day switched on to feed up for the winter and cold weather coming up, but also have a switch off time as well.

If using flavourings be careful as sometimes winter baits can be so over-flavoured that they turn fish off. Flavouring of baits works but can be a disadvantage where the same bait and flavours have been used too much to keep a real edge then use the flavourings sparingly.

Bait which offers a complete balanced diet including amino acids and attractant taste for example angel feed pellets (fish meal based) and break down easily, have an edge to attracting the fish and is easily digestible even in cold water temperatures. This adds a psychological effect and stimuli to the fish especially as they feed up for winter months ahead.

Bowes

Malcolm Rutter on peg 19 took 18 carp to double figures using sweet corn as hook bait on Friday.

Keith Brown fishing Q Tip with pellet had a great Saturday with 40 carp on peg 24 although it was windy and rainy.

Some good success has resulted in using seasonal berries with Carp as well as silvers taking them very well on the hook as long as some of the juices are escaping.

Fish moving still around lake and definitely following warm South winds, as the thermals in the lake are very defined now at this water temperature with the top and bottom layers being the coldest, and margins and middle layers the warmest, this does change dramatically after a frost or prolonged cold spells when the margins become cooler first.

Lookout

Chris Abbott fishing Thursday on 16aaa took carp, good Bream and skimmers on pellet with fish switching of feeding around 12 till 2 and then coming back on to feed again.

Fishing very well especially if you get shoals in front of you, as the fish are going into their winter shoals, not tight groups yet but small collective groups. Walk around the lake and watch for the fish movements and feed bubbles, as well as the wind direction and ambient temperatures as this will effect where the fish are, it is critical in winter to choose pegs carefully to ensure good catches..

Bassetts

Try soaking 3mm pellets for 5 mins drain of excess water and mix in some boiled hemp great for balling in very small balls. On the hook use pellet, maggot or if not going well sweet corn.

A trial match for the first time on Friday produced 22lb 10oz with a net of very good 2lb ish Ide and Rudd by Ray Wallace. We thought to try this, as it is so sheltered so if we have any very high winds this pond could be a fall back to match fishing in a smaller number.
