John Wilson, presenter of televisions Go Fishing and Ian Heaps a former world champion angler and now fisheries owner, were on hand at the Chatsworth’s Angling Fair to officially launch the Energy Networks Association’s (ENA) Angler Safety Guide last Saturday.

Both Ian and John recalled stories of friends who had suffered horrific injuries, including a fatality, as a result of electric shocks whilst fishing; they welcomed the guidance and the co-operation between the angling fraternity and the electricity industry, which has resulted in a significant reduction in the number of accidents that occur. The event was chaired by Stephen Hennell (Network Public Safety Officer for Central Networks) and was part of an ongoing campaign by ENA to improve public safety by working with stakeholder groups.

The document gives detailed information and guidance for landowners, fisheries operators and angling suppliers and it also carries a simple message for anglers to “look out” and to observe signs and notices; the document is available on the ENA website at http://www.energynetworks.org/spring/she/SHEpublicsafety.asp .
