The Angling Trust is encouraging sea anglers to attend a demonstration in Cornwall this weekend against the unfair and insufficient bass regulations.
Anglers will be calling for a fair deal for bass and anglers outside Fisheries Minister George Eustice’s constituency office in Camborne on Saturday, April 9th. Mr Eustice is the man responsible for negotiating the EU bass measures on behalf of the UK.
Recreational sea anglers have been enraged by the deal Mr Eustice agreed to, which sees recreational anglers banned from retaining any bass for the first six months of 2016 while commercial fixed gillnetters and hook & line fishermen were only banned from fishing in February and March.
To add insult to injury, fixed nets and hook & line fishermen have had their monthly vessel limits increased to 1.3 tonnes a month while recreational anglers are now limited to one bass per day from July 1st onwards.
Anglers joining the demonstration should meet at Rosewarne car park, Camborne, (TR14 8BE) at 10am.
The demonstration is being organised by the Cornish Federation of Sea Anglers and supported by the Angling Trust and the Bass Anglers’ Sportfishing Society.
David Mitchell, the Angling Trust’s Marine Campaigns Manager said: “I’m not aware of a similar demonstration by sea anglers being held. This really goes to show the level of anger that ordinary members of the public who enjoy their angling feel about the deal agreed to by Mr Eustice.
“I would encourage any sea anglers who are able to get to Camborne on Saturday to cancel any other plans they have and attend the demonstration.
“Mr Eustice needs to know that bass stocks are a publicly-owned asset and it’s not his job to be propping up the small scale commercial fishing industry at the expense of essential conservation measures to protect bass.”
