BDAA (www.bdaa.co.uk) have teamed up with Extrema Fishing Spain (http://www.extremafishingspain.com/). The British owned fishing holiday company, located between Madrid & Seville, Spain, wanted to support UK & Spanish charities by organising a five day carp angling competition in an attempt to raise funding for the charities whilst highlighting the benefits that the area has to offer UK anglers.
English ex patriot Craig Reid, local expert guide on the Spanish venues initially just wanted to support the two charities financially. Since the conception of the competition he realised that there was an opportunity to extend the competition & the companies holidays to disabled people in the future. Extrema Fishing boss Craig has realised the potential angling benefits to both UK & Spanish disabled anglers, with the help of former England International and President of the BDAA, Terry Moseley The two are to approach the Spanish authorities and local Spanish disabled groups in an effort to increase the opportunities of fishing these prolific waters by designing accessible facilities in the area.
Terry Moseley commented: "We have numerous enquiries as to where in Europe disabled anglers can go on holiday and fish, the idea of Craig’s to adapt and highlight the needs of disabled anglers will go a long way to us being able to direct disabled anglers from the UK to the facilities Extrema Fishing Spain may well be able to provide in the future".
Although there are no facilities in place currently, Craig is confident he can gain the support of the local Mayor and media to support his ideas that have the full backing of "The British Disabled Angling Association".
During November, there is a competition being held in Spain to kick off the process. Places are still available for anglers who want to shrug off the wet UK weather and enjoy the warm Spanish climate. Although there are no facilities at present for disabled anglers who require wheelchair access, Extrema & BDAA hope to bring you good news in the New year, when it is hoped the 2009 event should be the first to accommodate wheelchair disabled anglers in Spain.
